Sure-baniuk makes it two in a row

If he keeps this up he could change his name and become the 123rd Banack to play in this league and Armena’s only “Sure thing” on the mound.

It’s Ian Sure Banack.

Let’s not get carried away. Why would he want to be associated with that family.

Kidding, just kidding all you Banacks.

But after throwing seven complete on opening night, giving up just 2 earned runs in an 8-5 win over Bardo, then throwing a scoreless inning against the second game against Bardo, Ian Sherbaniuk mixed and matched his way to his second victory of the season in a 5-1 win over Camrose Tuesday night.

Sherbaniuk now sports a 1.4 ERA in 15 innings pitched. He’s the first Armena pitcher to start a season 2-0 since Joel Boettger in 2009.

Player coach Clark Banack said after the game the league has to consider Sherbaniuk as a nominee for the all-star game.

“The league better be looking at this kid for the all-star game,” Banack said. “Two in a row to start the season and only 3 earned runs usually gets you in the game.”

A caveat this year is the league has decided the managers will pick the pitchers. The game is set to take place June 28 in Camrose so Sherbaniuk may get another start to impress before the team is selected in two weeks time.

The Royals now head to Holden on Tuesday and back home Thursday against the Blue Jays in probably the most pivotal home-and-home series of the season.

The Royals sit just ½ game back of the young Jays who picked up a big home win over Bardo Tuesday night.
