Jays fly by Royals in big game

The final eastern trip and third of the season for the Royals was not the charm as a 4-run second inning sank the Armena Royals 8-3 Tuesday night in Holden.

Both teams ended up stranding runners on multiple occasions, including a bases loaded opportunity in the sixth inning where potential all-star candidate Wes Wilson lined out to right field on what could have narrowed the lead to 8-5 or even 8-6. The Royals also had runners in scoring position in the fourth and seventh but didn’t cash anything in.

It was pitcher Jake Thorowsky who once again stymied the Armena batters, especially early on, like he did on May 19 in an 11-2 drubbing of the Royals.

Thorowsky retired the first eight batters and only ran into trouble a couple innings basically due to some fielding errors and control issues later in the game.

Chad Samoiseti’s control in his first start in a couple years for the Royals was capitalized by the Blue Jays in the second inning. They were out to a 5-0 lead before the Royals could register their first hit.

The win was big for Holden who has struggled of late as they sat virtually tied with the Royals going in, having two games in hand.

The two teams meet again in Armena Thursday night in what has to be a must-win for the young Royals who have shown signs of great baseball but are struggling to put it together on a consistent basis.

Undefeated right hander Ian Sherbaniuk will likely get the start vs. rumoured starter Kyle Muzechka. Game time is 7 p.m. at Anniversary Park.
