Rebels rebound versus Milleteers

The Ryley Rebels took some heat this week after a forfeit loss to the Leduc Milleteers on Sunday afternoon via the Powerline Baseball League website culminating with the following post;

Dear Ryley,
Beers on me for any hitter that makes contact and puts a ball in play tonight, and for the outfielders, you may wanna back up. We double n’ dinger. Leave those soft singles at home.

Rebels SS Corey Epp quickly earned the Rebels a case of beer when he ripped the second pitch of the game from RHP Kevin Doyle into left centre for a lead off single for the Rebels. It was one of only 3 hits the Rebels could muster off of Doyle who despite walking the bases loaded in the third inning, managed to escape without surrendering a run before being relieved by RHP Mark Walker. It was in the fifth inning versus Walker that the Rebels struck. A lead off walk to Rebel newcomer LF Rick Cust opened the door for the Rebels to score a total of 4 runs off of Walker without recording an out before Leduc was forced to once again dip into the bullpen. After giving up a first pitch single to CF Kris Kushnerick, RHP Jon Anstey was able to settle down and strikeout out the side with runners in scoring position to stop the bleeding for the Milleteers.

Epp takes second on an overthrow on his RBI single in the 5th inning, part of his 3 for 3 performance.

The Rebels offence was held in check until the seventh when P Craig Koughan would add some insurance off of LHP Kelly Landeker by ripping a two run double to deep left field scoring 1B Kevin Reinholt and CF Kris Kushnerick, who both reached via singles, to push the Rebels lead to 6-1 heading into the home half
of the seventh.

One of the most rare occurrences happen in the scorebook as RF Tyson Schielke hit a ball on the screws back up the middle on Doyle who managed to deflect enough of the ball to pop it up to 2B Shawn Brinkworth who made the catch to finish the 1-4 line drive out.

The Rebels offence would total 11 hits off of the Milleteers pitching tonight scoring 6 runs while stealing two bags in the process. A lone sore spot on the score sheet for the Rebels were the 11 strikeouts that the Milleteers built up agains the Rebels.

On the mound for the Rebels was RHP Craig Koughan who was able to hold the Milleteers to only 4 hits in his 6.00 innings of work. Koughan’s only run against was unearned and came after two Rebel errors in the second extended the inning bringing home C Shane Gerein for Leduc’s only run on the evening. Koughan
spotted his fastball well and added in a good curveball to hold the Millteers to only one extra base hit (a double to 1B Murray Doyle which died/disappeared in the lush Leduc outfield). RHP Kris Kushnerick was given the ball in the seventh to close out the game in a non-save situation surrendering a jam shot single to LF Adam Pahl before getting a broken bat ground out to SS Jon Anstey to end the game.

The Rebels will now turn their focus to the surprising Armena Royals who have begun the season 2-1 after sweeping a home and home series versus the Bardo Athletics (13-2 & 8-3). The Rebels will have a total of 7 days off and will have either have RHP Don Oslund or a rested RHP Craig Koughan to turn to on Tuesday night in Ryley. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00pm.
