Milleteer Bats Come Alive Against Bardo

In the first league meeting of the year between the two playoff rivals both teams sent promising young arms to the mound as Mark Walker of the Milleteers faced of against Sean Melanson of the Bardo Athletics. Despite some afternoon rains the diamond was playable after some grounds keeping and the weather held off to get the game in.

The Milleteers got on the board first after SS Jon Anstey hit a swinging
bunt down the third base line for a base hit, but the third baseman tried to
bare hand it and made an ill advised throw into right field. Then a second
throwing error on the play allowed Anstey to scurry into third for the little
league triple, before being cashed in on a Trevor Pahl double.

The Milleteers would put up crooked numbers in the third and fourth after a
combination of hits, walks, and errors kept the line moving. Melanson probably
deserved a better fate, but every time he seemed to get the ground ball he
needed, it got booted to extend the inning.

After getting down 7-0, Bardo rallied back with their trade mark resilience
as they loaded the bases to start the fifth. Then it was the Milleteers turn to
kick the ball around as they misplayed two double play grounders into runs to
extend the inning and allowed Bardo to get back in it and put up a 5 spot.

That was as close as they would get however as the Milleteers answered back
with 7 unanswered runs and Walker blanked the Athletics the rest of the way for
the complete game victory, his second consecutive strong start in a row as he
seems to be finding his groove in the rotation.

The 14 runs were the most scored all year by the Milleteers as some of the
bats that were cold to start the season are starting to heat up just in time as
the team got some bad news as it looks like their all time hits leader Kevin
Doyle is going to be out for awhile with a shoulder injury. CF Greg Zilkie
chipped in 3 hits, to go along with Anstey’s second consecutive 3 hit
game.

Next up for the Milleteers will be the Armena Royals on the road before the
All Star break. Next Thursday the Milleteers will again face off against the
Bardo Athletics, but this time the game will be at Telus Field.
