Royals edge Runners in shortest game ever

It took less than an hour for the Armena Royals and Camrose Roadrunners to decide their back half of the June home-and-home series. In the end, it was the Royals who squeaked out another pitcher’s duel at Anniversay Park, 3-1 Tuesday night.

Joel Boettger went to work for Armena, who was let down the week before against Ryley with no run support. Crafty Josh Banack took the bump for Camrose.

Boettger worked through the first four innings unscathed and was buyoed early with an RBI single by Jason Buzzell before the lefty cranked a triple in the third to drive home the second run of the ball game. Buzzell would score when Boettger reached on an error, and that proved all the PBL veteran needed on a gorgeous night at the Little A.

Banack stymied Royals hitters time and time again. He only gave up four hits on the night to two hitters – Buzzell and lead-off Adam Johnson, who also led the game off with a triple of his own.

Boettger’s only blemish came in the fifth inning with runners on first and third. Catcher Chad Samoiseti tried to gun down a sprinting Jordan Banack for the second out, but the ball went to centre field to score Marcel Lesoway who doubled earlier in the inning.

The win puts the Royals one game ahead of both Holden and Camrose for the final playoff spot and a half game back of the Bardo Athletics for third. The Jays and Roadrunners now meet in a huge matchup Thursday night in Camrose while Armena looks to try and string together three wins for the first time since re-igniting the Royal franchise in 2008.
