Milleteers Come Up 1 Run Short In Goodfish

The Milleteers wound up the bridesmaids again at the Goodfish Lake Treaty Days as they could not muster any offense in the final against the Edmonton Blackhawks. As usual the Milleteers were scrambling for players and managed to field just nine guys on the hot weekend.

In the first game the Milleteers were two much for a rusty Goodfish Lake
Braves team that had only been able to play one game so far this year due to
rainouts. The offense pummelled the Braves as the Milleteers stole 10 bases and
even got a homerun from cleanup hitter Steven Pahl. The real story was the
combined no-hitter from crafty lefty Kelly Landaker, who went five innings
before tiring, and hard throwing Kirk Smith.

Later in the afternoon the rains came and drenched the diamond and rained
out a couple of games. After the elders convened in a tribal council it was
decided that the games would be played on Sunday, and only 5 innings in length
to get the seven games remaining in.

The Milleteers then met the two time defending champs from Legal in the
semi finals. With their ace lefty on the mound, Blair Cowley, Legal looked
poised to make it three in a row. The Milleteers had other plans however, as
they finally got to Cowley, who had been their kryptonite in their previous
trips to Goodfish as they jumped on him for 5 runs early. Those 5 runs would be
plenty for starter Jon Anstey as he put in one of the most dominant pitching
performances in recent memory against one of the better teams around as he threw
a one hitter and struck out twelve of the fifteen outs. His only blemish was a
fourth inning solo homerun over the short porch in right field.

In the final the Milleteers met up with the Edmonton Blackhawks. The Randy
Gregg led Blackhawks had a tough road to the finals as they squeaked out a 5-4
win against Cold Lake in the quater finals. Then they were matched up against
the 4 time defending North Saskatchewan River Baseball League champs and
defending Senior Provincial silver medalists, the Lloydminster Twins. The Twins
also picked up former Dodger farmhand Brant Stickell for the tournament and
pitched him against the Blackhawks, but a walk off solo homerun from Gregg`s son
Ryan got the Blackhawks to the final.

In the final neither team could get much going offensively as pitchers
Reagan Hoet from the Hawks and Steven Pahl from the Milleteers were stingy with
the hits as they only gave up two a piece. The only run came on the exciting
sac fly in the third inning as the doctor Randy Gregg rumbled in from third for
the championship winning run.

All in all it was good performance from the Milleteers, especially on the
mound as the pitching staff only gave up three hits in three games against a
couple of the better AA teams in the province.
