Vote: First Round Holden 87,92 vs. Tofield 91,94

Our first match-up of the Winter Voting Best PBL Franchise Bracket pits two relatively unknown commodities for most of us in the league.

Both teams won two championships. Holden in 1987 and 1992 and Tofield in 1991 and 1994.

During a time when the Ryley Rebels dominated the league, it was the amount of championship losses that were remarkable for these two franchises.

The Blue Jays lost to the Rebels in the 1988 final while the Lakers lost three straight years to Ryley during a Rebel three-peat. How crushing would that have been to lose three straight years to the same team?

Stories of the rivalries between not only the teams, but the two towns are legendary. Are they true? Does anyone have some side notes on these two teams who met many of times in the late 1980s?

The edge for me goes to the Lakers who stayed strong for nearly 15 years, despite having only won two titles.

They appeared in several finals and were still in the league through 2011. The Blue Jays on the other hand were a victim of the rural migration and loss of players.

Vote now at Facebook.com/PowerlineBaseball. The poll will last for three weeks before the winner of this play-in game takes on another unknown – the powerhouse Camrose Roadrunner team of the early 80s who won in 1983 over the upstart Armena Royals.

The other second-round matchup features two better-known teams in the Bardo A’s of the md 2000s who won two titles vs. the cinderella Ryley Rebels who won back-to-back in 1999 and 2000. Oh if only we could imagine Ray Lehman leading both teams against each other? We’ll take a peek at this one in Mid-October.
