Milleteers Split At The Axemen Spring Training Invitational
The Milleteers headed down the highway to Camrose to try and shake some
rust off in a little pre season tournament hosted by the Axemen. First up the
Milleteers drew the hosts, fresh off a dominating season in the AA NCABL which
saw them coast home to a regular season title before bowing out in the finals of
the playoffs.

Mark Walker took the hill for the Milleteers and he got some help early as
he used two double plays to work around three walks to pitch three scoreless.
Then Canadian Woman’s National Team member Tara Sliwkanich came in for relief,
but after a lead off error she had to work out of trouble and kept the game
close as she gave up three. Then hard throwing reliever Brad Engel finished off
the game giving up another three runs as he battled some wildness.

On the sticks the Milleteers were still working off the cobwebs as they
left a ton of runners on base thanks to a ridiculous 11 walks, but failed to get
the big hit to break it open as the Axemen pitching staff threw just enough
strikes to seal the victory.

In the second game of the day the Milleteers again squared off against a
AA opponent from the NCABL as they took on the veteran Edmonton Warriors. For
the second game in a row the Milleteers had to face a hard throwing lefty
starter as Warriors ace Curtis Burlet got the ball. The Milleteers however gave
the big lefty a rough ride as they used a combination of hits, walks, and errors
to put up a four run lead before he was relieved after three innings of work.
After that the Milleteers offense went into hibernation as usual as they managed
just one late insurance run to help out the pitching staff.

On the mound the Milleteers started 2012 PBL pitcher of the year, John
Anstey, and he looked good for his two scoreless innings before leaving with
lower back stiffness. Veteran Steve Pahl came in to relieve him and had an
adventurous 2 innings as he was a bit wild and had to deal with some shaky
defense, but was able to strike his way out of trouble as he only gave up one
unearned run, before he left when his pesky old elbow trouble flared up. Then
Ryan Walker, fresh of his far east vacation and an elbow injury as well came in
and nailed down the old fashioned three inning save to preserve the
victory.

It was a beautiful day for ball and the Milleteers definitely needed a few
games to break in some new faces and try and get into regular season form. It
was also great to see big Murray Doyle hobbling about on his crutches, giving
hope for a return next season. Next up will be another exhibition game on
Tuesday as the Milleteers will take on the PBL expansion Beaumont
Angels.
