Royals hang on in Holden

Knuckleballer Ian Sherbaniuk came in relief and pitched 5 and a third innings while the Armena Royals relied on a few newbies and a couple veterans to hang on to a nail-biting 9-8 victory in Holden Tuesday night.

Armena struck early with an Adam Johnson triple followed by a Landon Miller double. Miller would drive in another for his team-leading seventh RBI to make it 5-2 Royals after two.

Defence was another story.

Six errors on the night led to five unearned runs, including all three for the Blue Jays in the third to tie the game and run Miller, who started, off the hill.

In came Sherbaniuk who used his patented knuckleball to eat up the middle innings. The Royals added three more in the fourth before Johnson scored Cole Tomaszewski on a sac fly in the fifth that proved to be the game winner.

The win ended a prolonged draught in Holden that spanned almost five years with four losses to the Blue Jays and one to Leduc at the home to the most dangerous on-deck circle in the world.

The next game is versus the Ryley Rebels (1-0-1) in Armena on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
