Rebels Lose An Ugly One To Angels

It took the Angels and Rebels two hours to get from the opening pitch to the start of the fifth inning in what fans called an ugly affair. To make things worse, the mosquitoes made it even tougher for the Rebel fans to sit through a poorly played game by both teams as they combined for a total of twenty walks (15 by the Angels and 5 by the Rebels) before the game was called due to darkness.

Angels P Greg MacIntosh earned the win despite walking 9 and giving up 7 runs
P Brian Tavaroli was sent to the mound to pitch in his third consecutive game for the Rebels (2.00 Innings vs Leduc, 7.00 Innings vs Armena) and it was clear early that he did not have his good stuff which propelled him to a early season 2-0 record. The Angels would score seven runs (five earned) off of Tavaroli in his two innings of work on a total of five hits and a walk. CF Brandon Mosbeck would lead off the game with a hit by pitch which would be followed by a 3B Markus Breitkruz ground rule double the very next batter. The umpiring crew originally called the hit a home run but it was appealed by the Rebels outfielders that the ball bounced over the fence. The play was confirmed by a young Ryley girl who was playing in the centre field playground who also said it bounced over. The dagger for the Rebels came via 2B David Leblanc and his two RBI single with two out. A Tavaroli curveball would not only buckle Loblanc’s knees but cause him to bail out of the batters box as the pitch floated in for strike two. The very next pitch, a fastball, was ripped into the outfield to score P Greg MacIntosh and RF Ryan Lehman to make it 5-0 Angels.
The Angels offence would continue to put up runs against P Blake Helgeland who came in relief of Tavaroli and would work only one inning. Beaumont would cash in another four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a C Butch Denver three run home into the jet stream and over the 287 sign in left field, to make it 11-2 at the time and seemingly put the game out of reach with the infamous PBL Mercy rule in sight.
Angels CF Brandon Mosbeck would make a catch and narrowly double up SS Blake Helgeland at first in the second inning. Helgeland would have to scramble back after making it to second base.
P Corey Epp would enter the game to pitch what turned out to be the last three innings of the game in the fourth and posted the only two scoreless innings by any of the five pitchers in the game holding the Angels at bay in the fourth and fifth innings. It the sixth inning, the Angels would once again rally to collect a total of six hits and four runs to increase the lead from 11-10 to 15-10 as the Rebels offence was starting to produce some big innings. The first four Angels batters would reach base and the big blow came via P Marcus Breitkruz who would score two on a RBI double to left centre, the Angels fourth double and fifth extra base hit of the game.
1B Matt Berube of the Angels would finish the night 4 for 5 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored while the Angels eighth and ninth hitters (2B David Leblanc and C Butch Denver respectively) would finish the night a combined 5 for 6 with six RBIs and four runs scored.
1B Bill Duncan went 1 for 3 with a RBI in his Rebels debuted to go along with some smooth glove work at first base.
The only bright spot might have been the Rebels offence which despite only recording a total of nine hits was able to score thirteen runs, which should have been enough to win on most nights. Much was aided by the fifteen walks handed out by Angels pitching as ten of those fifteen walks would eventually come around to score for the Rebels. The Rebels uncharacteristically batted eleven men with nine of them scoring at least one run, seven collecting at least one hit and eight collecting at least one RBI.

But the evening for the offence was summed up on missed chances as the team left a total of twelve runners on base, nine of which were in scoring position including the tying run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Twice the Rebels would leave the bases loaded, once in the third inning and once again the sixth inning.
The loss will set the Rebels back a game from the Leduc Milleteers, who came from behind to beat the now 0-3 Bardo Athletics last night. The Rebels will now face the 2-2 Holden Blue Jays on Thursday night in Ryley where the Rebels hope to get back onto the winning track and play a solid game from start to finish for once this young season.
