Jays Top Roadrunners on Windy Evening

To write the same recap of the previous game against the Beaumont Angels would be lazy. However, sometimes laziness hints at the truth. The Holden Blue Jays again did enough at the plate to corral early runs and simply let their pitching handle the rest. The 5-1 final score showed a relatively well-played game from both sides, as costly errors sunk the Camrose Roadrunners on Tuesday evening.

Logan Skori continues a strong resurgence after last season’s elbow scare.  Throwing hard is one thing, but Skori has consistently changed speeds early this season, emerging as one of the Jays top pitching options. Longevity seems to be his only failing, as Skori maxes out at roughly four innings. Reliably, Stephen Hrabec came in for the final three frames, rebounding after a tough Armena outing.  Aside from an unearned run, the Jays staff continued its early season stinginess. Not easily ignored, Camrose starter Cory Keohen and Alex Roth each pitched three effective innings, with a few cheap singles and errors costing Keohen the early runs. On a windy night out to left with the potential for dingers, neither team showed any aptitude to get the ball outside the infield very often.

A timely Skori pickoff of Keohen at first – a contentious call – and a clutch 5-4-3 double play silenced any potential Roadrunners momentum, as steady defense made up for tepid Jays batting.  Again, if the recap resembles the last one, it isn’t my fault: the game, right down to its brevity, was a carbon copy of last Thursday. While a little more drama or fireworks would be welcome, the Jays can’t really complain as they climb back to .500 with the win. With a game in Ryley on Thursday, things necessarily have to change as the Jays pitching and defense battles the threatening and hefty bats of the Rebels.
