Royals squeak by Leduc in extras

A brilliant pitching performance by Steve Pahl was spoiled by some bunts and a couple errors while the Armena Royals managed to get a gutsy pitching performance from two separate hurlers to earn a 3-2 extra-inning victory Thursday night in Armena.

Pahl went the distance, giving up just five hits and striking out five. The only blemishes came in the second and fifth innings when call-up Paul Kolida knocked in an RBI single with two outs, and Dean Prpick grounded out for an RBI respectively.

The Milleteers never go away without a fight and a comeback. Thursday was no different. After Prpick took over in the fourth from a brief outing by Zenan Sherbaniuk, the Milleteers started striking in the sixth. A lead-off single followed by a walk set the table for a big inning.

Prpick managed to get a comebacker and fly out, but a ground out scored one, then he beaned a batter with the bases loaded to tie the game before getting a strikeout to end the big threat.

The teams exchanged zeros as both Prpick and Pahl dealt brilliantly. Prpick was assisted by three pickoffs on the night as well.

Finally in the ninth, a lead-off dribbler by Brendan Kudrowich hit a rough spot on the crusty infield and two bunts later set the stage for a walk-off line drive single by the hobbling Adam Johnson, who played first base from the fourth inning on.

The Royals now will join up with some friends of Armena for the Tri-Hosted tournament in Round Hill/Holden/Armena before hosting the Camrose Roadrunners Tuesday as part of their final game of this ongoing four-game home stretch.

So far it’s gone OK, with the Royals going 2-1, but Tuesday is a game the team really needs to come to play, before going on the road for most of June.
