Royals rookies, vets come together for home opener win

A discerning five-run first inning didn’t phase the young and older Armena Royals kids as they went on to mount a seven-run first and scored in every one of the first five innings for a 15-9 win over Beaumont on a cold and windy Saturday.

Ian Sherbaniuk started for the Royals and got the victory. An eventful first inning saw the now-veteran young knuckleballer in his fifth season get out to a bit of a rough start. However, with the bases loaded he looked like he struck out Matt Berube on an outside fastball. He didn’t get the call and Berube made hay with a bases-clearing double.

Armena responded by being patient at the plate, before Dave Andreassen crushed a bases-clearing double of his own in a seven-run retort. It was a big day at the plate for a plethora of Royals, including Cole Tomaszewski who went 3-for-4 with a double with two RBI, Adam Johnson who went 3-for-5 and rookies Doug Morris who went 3-for-4 with a double and Kenton White, 2-for-4 with a double as well. Sherbaniuk himself also went 3-for-4 at the dish.

Rookie Lyndon Galvin came in to relieve an unimpressed Sherbaniuk who was looking to get a complete game. GM Jason Buzzell made the executive decision to hand the ball over to Galvin who struck out one and walked two in his debut.

The Royals now head to their favourite diamond in Leduc before hosting Holden Thursday to round out the three games in five day start to the season.
