Royals rally late for victory in Leduc

Rookie Doug Morris went five innings on the hill before Zenan Sherbaniuk took over in relief and Morris himself drove home the winning run in a four-run seventh to complete an improbable comeback over the five-time PBL champions.

Leduc capitalized on some shoddy Armena defense in the first three innings to stake a 3-1 lead. Morris got a comebacker, which he promptly tossed into left field with the bases loaded in the third. Three of the four Milleteers runs were unearned.

But the young Royals hung around long enough, and a big stop by Zenan Sherbaniuk in the bottom of the sixth with two on and none out helped the Royals get back into what was seemingly heading toward another loss in Leduc.

After Leduc pulled Jon Anstey who threw five innings and gave up just one run, Jason Buzzell notched a single with one out to start the rally. A couple walks and fielder’s choices later set the stage for Steven Pahl to call his own number against the rookie Doug Morris with the bases juiced.

Morris made hay and Sherbaniuk got help from Adam Johnson who gunned down Brad Engel looking to steal second after a one-out walk. The younger of the two Sherbaniuk brothers got a fly out to right to seal the comeback.

The two Sherbaniuk brothers now have both wins for the Royals as they head back home to take on the red-hot Holden Blue Jays, who defeated Bardo 11-0 Tuesday night and shutout the Milleteers 1-0 on opening day.

The win marked only the second time the franchise had won in Leduc (now 2-7 lifetime), and the first regular season win. The only other win was game one of the 2012 PBL championship, which Armena won 6-1.
