1st Annual Milleteers Tourney In the Books

The first men’s baseball tournament to be hosted in Leduc in decades took place this past weekend and saw some of the best senior teams in the province lock horns.  The Milleteers partnered up with Leduc Minor Ball, who ran the beer gardens, the Canadian Brewhouse, and the City of Leduc who provided funding in the form of a grant from the Sports Tourism Fund to put on the tournament.

The tournament was a five team double elimination tournament that kicked off Friday night as the host Leduc Milleteers took on the 2012 Senior AA champs from Lacombe.  The Lacombe Dodgers erased an early deficit and former Milleteer Drew Boyer would get a complete game win in the opener.

Saturday morning the two time provincial champs from Rosalind were too much for the Innisfail Indians as they mercied them in five innings.  The next game saw the defending provincial champs from Provost cruise to a victory over Lacombe to send them to the loser’s bracket.

Next up was a tight battle between Innisfail and Leduc that had to be decided in extra innings as Leduc prevailed with a great complete game effort from Chad Soucy.  The next game would also need extras as Provost prevailed over Rosalind in the second extra frame.

In the night cap was a rematch from the night before with a berth in the semi-finals on the line as Lacombe and Leduc would square off again.  This time the Dodgers got the bats going early and often as the Milleteers ran out of steam as they took a nine nothing victory.

On Sunday in the semi-finals the Lacombe bats stayed hot as they would again score nine runs to erase an early deficit to get past the scrappy Rosalind Athletics and set up another rematch with the Provost Combine Pilots for the money and the glory.  Despite playing their fifth game of the weekend the Lacombe Dodgers were the sharper team as their bats stayed hot as they mercied the Combine Pilots 14-3 just before the rain started.  Drew Boyer would pick up another complete game win for his new squad staking his claim to tournament MVP.
