Jays top Royals in battle for first

The storyline has been the same all season, pitcher’s duels and mistakes, and the only game in the PBL Thursday night took on the same plot as the Holden Blue Jays edged the first place Armena Royals 3-2 in Holden in a pivotal game for both teams.

Grayson Soprovich got the ball for the Jays while Zenan Sherbaniuk took the bump for Armena. Soprovich struck out seven while Sherbaniuk struggled with control early, and had a couple costly errors behind him cash key runs that decided the game.

The Jays scored early on a sac fly in the first, before both teams sailed through the first four innings. It wasn’t until the top of the fifth when Chad Samoisette led off with a solo shot to left centre and Landon Miller launched an RBI double to score Kenton White all the way from first to give the Royals a 2-1 lead.

But the Holden Blue Jays Zak Lang would crack an RBI double to tie the game and Soprovich would hold the Royals at bay in the final three frames. With two outs in the sixth and Randall Ziegler on second, a throwing error allowed Ziegler to score the winning run.

The Royals play in Rosalind this weekend while the Jays head to Ryley for tournaments. The Royals then play Camrose on June 26 but the Blue Jays are off from league action (barring any make-up games) until July 3 when they host Leduc.
