Report card time: Powerline mid-term grades

Ryley Rebels (A+)

The Rebels have picked up where they left off last season showing it wasn’t just a hot team during a hot month. Getting regulars out and good pitching from new-old guys has bouyed their already potent offence. Now there’s only one question left – can they throw the perfect season and go 18-0?

Armena Royals (A-)

The Royals have won some tough games they maybe shouldn’t have won, and still have the early blemish of an ugly defensive effort in Ryley. Newcomers have pitched in nicely but it’s the veterans who will need to be equally as strong down the stretch. They lead the league offensively but that has a tendency to dry up a bit come playoff time meaning defence will have to improve.

Beaumont Angels (B+)

The Angels roared out to a 4-0 start but stumbled as of late, losing a tough one to Armena. Second in offence, and getting good pitching was key early on. Their defence in previous years was questionable but as that continues to improve, the team is hopeful they can hang on to the good start they had and earn their first playoff berth after losing in a one-game playoff last year.

Holden Blue Jays (B-)

The Blue Jays have been snake-bitten again at the plate. Logan Skori has hurled gems but has only gotten a couple runs in support. At 3-4, they’ll have to find a way to get in with some more timely hits to accompany their pitching arsenal. As always, once they’re in, they’re a dangerous first-round opponent.

Rosalind Athletics (C)

Rosalind would probably be hardest on themselves. A couple close losses and a couple games where their offence was shutdown by perennial pitching powers Leduc and Holden have them at 3-4. The team has to have some leeway getting used to the two-game-per-week schedule which has seen no rainouts and tough games every night.

Leduc Milleteers (C)

Leduc was probably the only team with an F if we had posted this after four games. They’ve now reeled off three straight wins and are coming into form as they did last year. They’ll be a threat in the second half it seems and will make the races even tighter.

Bardo Athletics (C-)

Bardo has been unlucky in the close games. Two one-run losses of late make a big difference and it’s going to be difficult to get back in the race. The games with the 3-4 teams though will be critical and anything can happen with this team that always seems to peak late.

Camrose Roadrunners (D)

The Roadrunners continue to be depleted and lack pitching depth. They’ve battled hard for a few innings in many games before crumbling late. Getting that first win against one of the last seven games would be a feather in the cap for this rebuilding squad.
