Springfield Minor Baseball Association will be changing the team name
The name “Braves” has been used by Springfield Minor Baseball for decades. The community of Springfield has embraced baseball for generations, thus engendering strong connections to the sport and the name. Our players, coaches and fans, both past and present have been proud to have been a “Brave”.
While maintaining respect in our baseball history, the Springfield Minor Baseball Association (SMBA) Board is acutely aware that not all members of our community may find the nickname respectful, appropriate or inclusive. In the spirit of reconciliation, inclusivity and a strong desire to connect with all of our community members, the SMBA Board has decided to move forward with a name change. The aim of the Board is to have a new name and logo in place for the 2021 season.
In the theme of inclusivity, SMBA will use the upcoming 2020 season to engage our community in a search for a new name and logo. Please stay tuned for exciting updates throughout the season and opportunities to add your voice to Springfield Minor Baseball’s new direction.
To keep abreast of all things SMBA and for information on the upcoming 2020 season, spring registration and our name change, please regularly check our website and social media feeds.
On behalf of the SMBA Board,
Mike Peterson
SMBA President
