As good as things can be at times, it doesn’t take long for a humbling experience to make its appearance. Pius and Catholic Memorial were locked up in a dandy on Wednesday afternoon at beautiful Frame Park. The seesaw battle saw Pius jump out early to a 2-0 lead on a Kevin Doerr 2-Out Single that plated 2 after their half of the 2nd, only to have CM go ahead with a 3-Spot in their half of the Inning. After trailing 3-2 after 2, Pius tied it at 3 with a Run in the 3rd. Pius went ahead 4-3 in the 6th, but CM tied it in their half of the Inning. The stage was set for an exciting finish. Pius went down quietly in the 7th. With Perry on in relief of Lenski, the CM half of the inning started out great for the Popes, with 2 quick CM outs. It looked like extra Innings were the order of business today, but it wasn’t in the cards though. After 2-Outs, a CM Single and Wild Pitch brought slugger Kinnear to the plate. A Single to Right Center by Kinnear chased the runner home from 2nd, and sent the Popes reeling. It was a battle to the end. Give CM credit, they got the Hit when they needed it. Junior Steve Lenski started for Pius giving up 3-Runs on 5-Hits while striking out 1. Scott Perry threw 1 1/3 Innings of relief giving up 1-Run on 2-Hits, to take the loss. Kevin Doerr collected 2-Hits and 2-RBI. Dan Foy reached 3X’s, and added 2-SB’s, a Single, and RBI. Scott Schreck scored 2 of Pius’s 4-Runs. Tim Pauly and Steve Lenski also had a hit in the game. Senior catcher Kevin Doerr had another CS giving him 14 on the year. The loss dropped Pius to 11-7 in Conference play. With 3 Conference games left, a strong finish will give Pius a high seed in the upcoming Regional. |
