| Game Notes: WOW? This one turned out to be a little more stressful than the Wauwatosa West game. Coach Kehoss had ever reason to be concerned as the Popes fell behind early 4-1 after the top of the 41/2 Innings. With no time to panic, the Popes finally realized they were in a game and got things going in their half of the 4th. Up to this point WAH pitcher Vertinek looked like Cy Young. His 85 MPH fastball, along with some occasional wildness was just enough to keep the Pius hitters a little lose and tentative in the box. Coach Kehoss must have had some “Words of Wisdom” for the boys between Innings, because they looked totally different at the plate in the 4th. The Pius hitters became a lot more patient and started to get to the opposing pitcher. It also helped that Vertinek started to question the umpire’s strike zone. OK, Pius scored 5-Runs in chasing Vertinek from the game. Saglin (2-RBI), Penn, Lenski, and Doerr led the 4-Hit outburst to take the lead and eventual win. After a 10-Day layoff, senior Joel Seagraves took the hill for Pius, and after some early Inning jitters, settled down to get the complete game win, allowing 4-Runs on 7-Hits. Sean Saglin’s 2-Run DBL to tie it at 4-apiece in the 4th was the turning point in the game. Kevin Doerr followed Saglin with a Single and the go-ahead Run. Pius added 3 Insurance runs in the 5th to put it away. Kevin Doerr (3-Hits, 3 RBI), and Steve Lenski (2-Hits, 2-Runs, 1-RBI) led the 10-Hit attack, as the bats took over in this one. Jeremy Penn (2-Runs), Tim Pauly, Scott Schreck, also had a Hit in the game. Seagraves reached 3X’s and scored 2-Runs. | ||||||||||
