Lady Wildcats beat Lady Falcons

The WJHS volleyball team opened the 2010 season with a loss to non-conference opponent Charlotte Lady Tigers on August 12. Waverly’s B-team also suffered their first loss. On Tuesday, August 17, the Lady Wildcats traveled to Fairview to begin conference play.
The coin toss was won by Fairview and they elected to serve first. The Lady Wildcats made it hard for themselves from the start allowing the Lady Falcons to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Fairview remained ahead until late in the first set. The Lady Wildcats were down 13-19 and then put together a 6-point run with Malena Martin at the serving line. But that was as close as the Lady Wildcats could get in the first set. The Lady Falcons won 25-20.
The second set remained much closer as the score see-sawed back and forth until late in the set. The Lady Wildcats were up by 1 point, 21-20, when they had a 4-point run and took the set 25-20. Waverly won the coin toss in the third set, took an early lead, and never relinquished that lead. The Lady Wildcats won the set 15-10 and added their first win of the season.
Serving leaders for Waverly were Desiray Sanchez 5 for 5 with 1 ace, Malena Martin 13 for 14 with 3 aces, Jordan Wertz 12 for 14 with 1 ace, Hannah Scott 6 for 7 with 1 ace, and Keyle Holland 6 for 7. Passing leaders were Keyle Holland 30 for 33 with 2 kills and 2 digs, Hannah Scott 18 for 20, and Jordan Wertz 23 for 29 with 1 dig.
Waverly’s B-team also needed 3 sets to determine the match winner. The Lady Wildcats struggled in the first set taking the loss 25-10. But they came alive after that. Waverly won the second set 26-24. In the third set both teams played hard down to the final point. The Lady Falcons won the set 18-16.
Serving leaders for Waverly were Lexi McGranahan 12 for 12 with 6 aces, Lofton Etheridge 14 for 16 with 3 aces, Nicole Henry 4 for 4 and Abby Mayberry 1 for 1. Passing leaders were Abbie Landiss 10 for 11 with 1 dig, Lofton Etheridge 21 for 25, Emma Rushton 16 for 20 with 3 digs, and Emily Davis 8 for 10 with 1 dig.
