#12 Malena Martin goes up strong at the net for the Lady Wildcats in their 25-17 first set win against William James.
The Lady Wildcats have spent the first half of their season on the road due to the gym floor being repaired in the Robert Reid Gymnasium from the May Flood. On August 19, Waverly traveled to White Bluff to face the William James Lady Colonels in their third match of the season. The outing for the Lady Wildcats was not a favorable one as the Lady Colonels easily took the win in 2 sets, 25-9 and 25-14.
The second meeting between the two schools proved to be much closer than the first. With their home court not quite complete, the Lady Wildcats hosted the Lady Colonels at Waverly Central High School on August 30. The Lady Wildcats played well and had great serving performances from Jordan Wertz and Desiray Sanchez to win the first set 25-17. The second set went to the Lady Colonels, 25-16, as Waverly just could not put together any scoring runs for the set. But this meant the match needed to be decided in the third set. Both teams battled for the match win keeping the score close. The Lady Wildcats had a 10-8 lead late in the set when the Lady Colonels came up with a 6-point run to give William James a 14-10 lead. Waverly won the rally and were able to put a couple more points on the board. But, the Lady Wildcats lost the next rally giving William James a 15-12 win.
Serving leaders for Waverly were Malena Martin 4 for 4, Desiray Sanchez 9 for 10 with 1 ace, Maecayla Davis 7 for 8 with 2 aces, and Jordan Wertz 12 for 14 with 2 aces, and Hannah Scott 4 for 6 with 1 ace. Passing leaders were Hannah Scott 19 for 19 with 3 digs, Jordan Wertz 21 for 23 with 2 digs, Maecayla Davis 13 for 16 with 1 dig, Keyle Holland 24 for 32, and Malena Martin 10 for 14 with 4 digs. Desiray Sanchez added a kill for Waverly.
