Congrats to Monona Braves

On Sunday October 11th, the Home Talent League held their annual awards banquet at Rex's Innkeeper in Waunakee.

The Braves celebrated their Eastern Section Championship by receiving a plaque, as well as receiving two individual awards.

Aaron Schmidt took home an engraved watch for being named the Eastern Section MVP.  Aaron anchored the Braves outfield in center all season long and had a strong year at the plate, hitting .449 and finishing 2nd in the Eastern Section batting title race.  Great year Aaron.

Nancy Anthony received an engraved plaque for being named the Cloyance Zweifel Memorial Award winner for her dedication to the Home Talent League and specifically for assistance to Monona. Thanks again for everything Nancy, well deserved!

A big congrats to Aaron, Nancy and all the rest of the Monona Braves players, families, coaches, managers and supporters on a successful 2015 season.  If you get a chance, send Aaron and Mike & Nancy a message congratulating them on their individual achievements.

Home Talent League playoffs: Verona, Ashton and Fort Atkinson in final three

There was plenty at stake during Sunday’s Home Talent League final four game in Ashton.

Verona, after losing its opening game of the playoffs, had to win to have a chance at claiming the baseball championship, while defending champion Ashton could claim back-to-back titles with a victory.

Kyle Nelson scattered four hits as Verona shut out Ashton 4-0, extending the season two more weeks.

Fort Atkinson, a 4-3 winner over Monona in 11 innings, will travel to Ashton next week with Verona awaiting the winner.

“We played Verona baseball today,” said manager Nick Krohn, whose team beat Monona last week. “We got great pitching from Nelson, played solid defense, and scored enough runs to win the game.”

Verona scored in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded groundout by Cole Kroncke.

Verona added two more in the fifth and one in the eighth.

Justin Scanlon and Derek Burgenske drove in the fifth-inning runs while Danny Koss had an RBI single in the eighth.

The rest was up to Nelson.

He allowed just two runners to reach second base, walking three and striking out 10 in nine innings.

“I have never pitched in games like this before,” Nelson said. “This is the first time I have pitched in the playoffs and it is amazing. I had all three of my pitches working today and had great defense to go with it.”

Ashton manager Dave Adler knew his team had its best shot of winning a second straight championship at home in front of a huge crowd on Sunday.

“We had our chances today, but give Verona and Nelson all the credit,” Adler said.

“You don’t win games when you don’t score. We’ve been here before and we know what we need to do.”

Home Talent League playoffs: Derek Burgenske, Verona beat Monona

After watching his team lose the first game in the Home Talent League championship round robin finals, Verona manager Nick Krohn knew the season wasn’t over.

Over the past week, the whole Verona team began believing their manager.

Derek Burgenske doubled twice and drove in five runs, Kyle Nelson pitched seven solid innings and the Verona defense turned in some fantastic plays, all of which led to a 9-3 win over Eastern Section champion Monona on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Verona has a chance to extend the season an extra week with a victory at Ashton next Sunday.

“You control what you can control,” Krohn said. “The guys were a little down last week but as the week went along the guys knew that winning a title wasn’t as farfetched as it seemed after the loss.”

Verona jumped in front in the first inning, plating a run without recording a hit.

Justin Scanlon walked, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on Burgenske’s groundout to first.

Monona tied the game in the second on an RBI groundout by Vince Schmitz.

Verona took control shortly after, scoring twice in the third and four times in the fourth.

Burgenske came up with the big hit in the fourth, clearing the bases with a three-run double that the Monona center fielder lost in the sun to give Verona a 7-1 lead.

Verona added runs in the sixth and seventh, including another RBI double from Burgenske.

“I found the sun in the fourth inning and the result was positive,” Burgenske, the Western Section batting champion, said. “But it always helps when you have players getting on base in front of you. I’ve had success this season because of Scanlon, he is usually good for two hits a game and that allows me to have RBI chances.”

Home Talent League playoffs:
Fort Atkinson, Ashton win openers in championship series round robin

For the second week in a row, Fort Atkinson trailed by two runs late in the game.

And for the second straight time, it found a way to pull out the victory.

Dan Dean drilled an RBI single with one out in the eighth inning and Fort Atkinson held on for a 4-3 road win Sunday over previously unbeaten Verona in the first round of the Home Talent League championship series.

“These guys are troopers, they really don’t back down at any time,” Fort Atkinson manager Tim Garant said. “They just keep moving forward. We’re young and kind of foolish but that’s what is so nice about it. We find ways to win.”

Verona opened the scoring in the first inning when Mike Jordahl hit an RBI single.

Fort Atkinson’s Travis Hartmann tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the third, driving in Josh Crandall.

Verona regained the lead in the bottom of the third as Jordahl struck again, driving in a pair of runs on a single against Fort starter Frank Raff.

“After the third inning, I was a little down — the team wasn’t, but I was,” said Raff, who tossed a complete game to pick up the win. “But I settled down and kept them off balance. I threw strikes and that was what it took. I knew our guys wouldn’t stop battling and they didn’t.”

After allowing a run in the third, Kyle Nelson tossed four scoreless innings before Fort Atkinson was finally able to string together a few hits in the eighth.

The rally started when Bryan Wallace was hit by a pitch. Tyler Sexton followed with a single before the runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt.

After a wild pitch scored Wallace, Crandall singled in the tying run to set up Dean’s go-ahead base hit.

“First off, it was Josh Crandall’s big hit that got us going and got our fans into the game,” Dean said. “Then as I am running down to first (after a single), my thought is that the runner on second had better be scoring.”
