Posted Jun 8/11 - Rockets win 12-1 over Van Wert in home opener

Portland Rockets 12 Van Wert Twisters 1  June 7,2011

Good morning baseball fans, it’s a beautiful day in Portland.  Baseball at the runkle-miller field last nite and it was fun to see everyone, fun to play at the corner, fun to win

12-1 over vanwert.  Meet the team night, 20 rockets were introduced before a fine opening nite crowd, and the team did not disappoint. The locals scored as they often do, first, captain and home town favorite heath Williams walked, stole second, and scored on ss brady roundtree’s long double to rightcenter.  Roundtree then scored on nate clem’s single..  Clem of Anderson gave the crowd a jolt with a vicious home run smash in the 3rd, that cleared the left field fence on a line, and rolled to the woods.

Clem had 2 hits as did c geoff bowers, 3 hits for cf brad kindred.  The rockets had 17 hits in the 7 inning contest. Also cody Johnson ft. wayne had a 3 run double to the gap in right.

In discussion with ray cooney, he pointed out that the competition we faced in Richmond and Celina no doubt, has us ready for these league games.  Those power arms we faced last week have us timed up and more ready at the plate.

Also on showcase was mound performer, left hander devin willburn of Selma.  He went 4 perfect innings and not one ball was hit out of the infield. he struck out 7 of the 12 he faced.  He could have perhaps pitched a perfect game,  but we are developing a staff so tyler Holloway and brad benbow completed the chores,  and no hits for van wert, that’s right,  wilburn, Holloway and benbow combine on a no-hitter.

Mercy rule in effect, this titanic struggle –2 hr. 7 min

But just  as important, we played a home game, so much to be thankful for, so thanks city parks dept, moving all that grass, rocky Williams for moving twice the infield, jim eyink for bring your work crew out, james Brewster Brewster electric for his full day on the lights project, judge clem for his field help, gyles laux for posting game today sign

See this home game, not just the Selma kid, the Pendleton guy, the jay county guy, this successful venture made possible by the team effort.  Thanks for the support, love ya in Portland and the sea of lawn chairs in the shade, the kids know we have something in this town.  Cant wait to see all the folks next tues when Decatur comes to town.  Special!

Rockets record now 2-3, and big project in store,,longest road trip of year,,,,league DH in mich city sat, then in whiting vs. northwest patriots on sun.  Portland will be represented and they always save their best for us.  Check out league standings on www.leaguelineup/heartland league.com  happy birthday tyler Reynolds, 20  good to visit with my coach larry chittum  did I mention don and marilyn maloy in the house???
