Posted Nov 19/11 - Pflugerville moves into Greater Austin Area Tournament championship game with 79-56 win over Anderson; faces Victoria East in 4 p.m. title game Saturday
AUSTIN, Texas -- Behind a season-high 21 points from junior post Jonelle Smith and another double-double from senior post Itiana Taylor who collected 16 points and a season and game-high 18 rebounds,
state-ranked Pflugerville posted a 79-56 victory over Anderson HS
Saturday morning to advance to the championship game at the Greater
Austin Area Tournament. Pflugerville pushes its record to 8-0 and will
face Victoria East in the 4:00 p.m. championship game to be held at
tourney host McNeil HS.
Joining Smith and Taylor in double-digit scoring were senior guard Jasmyn Booker (pictured) with 14 points and senior guard Ari Booth (11). Booker also had a game-high six assists.
This is the third consecutive year P'ville will
play in the tourney's title game as the Panthers won the 2009 tourney
with a 54-46 win over Arlington Martin before losing a tough 48-47
decision in last year's title game to Midland.
Victoria East defeated Pflugerville Connally 43-37 in the other semifinal, holding Connally to just seven second-half points.
Against Anderson, now 5-1, Pflugerville jumped out to a 27-17 lead after
one period. The Panthers closed out the quarter with a 9-0 run in the
last two minutes. Taylor notched 10 points, eight rebounds and two
steals in the quarter.
The Panthers led at intermission, 55-26 as Smith scored 16 of her points
in the first half and Taylor had 13 points and 13 boards at the break.
