The Tuesday, Jan. 31 District 16-5A
game between Pflugerville and McNeil HS will feature fund-raising efforts to
fight cancer and to raise funds for the Susan Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The game takes place on "Purple Night" as all cancer survivors in attendance
will be introduced before game time. The varsity game tips at 7:30 p.m. at
McNeil HS. [UPDATE Feb. 1:] Thanks to the
generosity of the fans in attendance and the sale of commemorative t-shirts, a
total of $1,497.81 was raised for the scholarship.
Pflugerville and McNeil sold special purple game shirts prior to the contest.
Blue wrist bands (signifying the fight against colon cancer) also be will be
sold for $1 at the game. After introductions and before the game begins,
donations will be solicited. The Susan Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund recently was established by the Round
Rock ISD in honor of Brown, who spent 25 years as an educator, basketball coach
(in Austin, Leander, Temple) and then served as an assistant
superintendent/human resources in the RRISD. Brown passed away in November 2011
at the age of 49 due to complications from cancer. The Scholarship, funded
through the district's education foundation, is a $1,000 scholarship to be given
to one female athlete from any of the district’s five high schools (Cedar
Ridge, McNeil, Round Rock, Stony Point and Westwood) each year. Read more about
