PFLUGERVILLE, Texas - Buoyed by clutch free throw shooting and a staunch defensive effort down the stretch, the state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers stopped District 16-5A opponent Stony Point, 74-73 Tuesday night at the Panther Gym.
Pflugerville, ranked No. 2 in the state in the TABC/Tex Basketball Preps Magazine weekly poll, stayed undefeated (15-0) with the District win and moved to 2-0 in district action.
The Panthers forced the Tigers into five turnovers in the final seven minutes of the game. This included a Stony Point turnover with 16 seconds left in the game with the score tied, 73-73. Panther senior guard Brenisha Payne was fouled on a drive to the basket with three seconds left and made the first of two free throws for the 74-73 lead. Payne missed the second free throw and the ball was scooped up by Stony Point guard Autumn Avina who fired a desparation shot from halfcourt which bounced hard and wide off the backboard
The Panthers held a 37-30 advantage at halftime.
The Panthers were unable to control Stony Point's 6-2 sophomore post Jordan Moore who netted a game-high 31 points - the most points scored by an individual player against the Panthers this year. Moore netted 17 of her 31 points in the final half
