PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- Behind the senior guard duo of Amy Staha (19 points) and Bre Payne (15 points), the undefeated and nationally-ranked Pflugerville basketball team upended district opponent Westwood High School, 65-47, Friday night on PHS Teacher/Alumni/Staff Appreciation Night. The win moves P'ville to 29-0 overall and to 8-0 in District 16-5A action.
Staha and Payne were the only Panthers in double-figure scoring. Staha also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds while Payne added seven rebounds and three steals. Junior post Jonelle Smith had nine points while junior guards Alyssa Echols and Kalea King each chipped in with seven points and Echols also had three steals.
After dominating the first quarter and holding a 25-8 lead, the Panthers increased their lead to 20 points at intermission, 38-18.
Westwood is now 17-11 overall and 2-5 in district play.
The Panther JV squad picked up another victory with a 48-19 win over Westwood behind freshman post Alexis Bryant's game-high 15 points. The Pflugerville freshmen teams both dropped games to Westwood by 56-21 (freshman Gold "A" game) and 29-10 (freshman Blue "B" game) scores.
Pflugerville now has an open mid-week date and will return to action on Friday, Jan. 25 when it hosts Round Rock. The varsity game tips at 7 p.m. at the Panther Gym while the junior varsity and freshman "A" (Gold) teams play at 5:30 p.m.
