Posted Jun 3/10 - The Rockets traveled again to Richmond Wednesday night to finish business with the RiverRats at McBride Stadium
Good Morning Baseball fans, it's a beautiful day in Portland!  The Rockets traveled again to Richmond Wednesday night to finish business with the RiverRats at McBride Stadium. Business was finished early! Rockets got the lead off man, then hit into a double play. Richmond got their first three men on, scored 9 runs in the 1st inning and let to a 13-1 romp, business done early! Had sprinkles, but no rain. Weatherman, Kevin McGowan, shared his Doppler phone gizmo and assured us we would get the game in, and we did. I have to get one of those gizmos! Rockets, a 5-2 loser on Tuesday, played them tough after the first inning allowing no runs over 7 innings, but 2 innings were the undoing! Nine runs in the 1st off starter Billy Geeslin.Tyler Mills came in for 4 innings pitching 1 hit shutout baseball; guess the old coach started the wrong guy! Tyler Painter pitched an inning and Derek Mounsey of DePauw pitched the last 3 innings and allowed only 2 base runners.  Despite the lopsided score and the 11 walks in the game, the pitchers are starting to mold into a rotation and the hitters are making more solid contact. This competition will only serve to make us better down the road. Offensively, the Rockets had 6 hits (5 the night before), and we hit into 3 double plays in 4 innings. We did manage to score in the 8th inning.  Here's a name to watch out for...Conception Morero, a Shortstop from Sinclair and a teammate of Thomas McGowan, is going to be drafted by the Cleveland Indians. He was drafted once before out of high school but now it is his time. To stay fine tuned, he played for Portland last night. He doubled in the 8th. Another Rocket recruit, Cody Johnson from Fort Wayne Snider High School, had a clutch 2 out single to drive him in.  This just in...4 games into the season and we have an injury list. Pitchers Josh Atkinson (All-Conference and Manchester ace) hurt his arm in the championship game and is probably done for the year. Josh set several Spartan records and will continue to serve as pitching coach in Portland. Ethan Tribolet is out with a sprained ankle suffered in Regionals for Huntington University. Also, Assistant Coach, Doug Tipton, is recouping after being in the hospital.  Get well soon, Doug!!
Of special note, Coach Jon Cate, gave us a tour of the clubhouse, home office and all the "cool stuff" inside McBride Stadium. We highly encourage you to travel down Highway 27 to this jewel. What an organization and it feels like baseball for all ages. Coach Cate has been a good friend of years and is a member of the Indiana High School Hall of Fame and a charter member of the Indiana coaching fraternity. John founded the Richmond Roosters. Former Rockets Doug Bolton, John Pettibone, and Pete Byrum played on this frontier franchise.  The Rockets go back to action on Sunday in Celina, then Monday at home.  Next week on Sunday is a doubleheader at Jom Hoess Field at 2 pm. VanMatre, Kill & Bollenbacher are starters for the Rockets.  Speaking of "old relics" like McBride Stadium, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" this week to Chris Hearn.   Randy Miller pg 14
