Friday evening's contest between the Hancock Hawks and the Bay High Tigers was everything a rivalry game should be and more.
The game was filled with big plays and at the end it was the Tigers (2-1) who emerged victorious, overcoming a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win 21-20 in front of a standing room only crowd at Brett Favre Field.
"This was a great football game," Bay High head coach Jeff Hopgood said. "Our kids fought hard against a great Hancock team. Our team has a lot of heart and character."
Bay High got off to a good start when Kendal Island recovered a fumble at the Hawks 45 on the second play of the game.
The Tigers slugged out three first downs behind runs by Julious Allen and Braxton Lafontaine. 12 plays into the drive, they found the end-zone with 6:04 to play in the first when Lafontaine hit Brennan Dunklin on a 10-yard scoring strike.
Seth Johnson added the point-after to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
The score remained the same until early in the second quarter, when the Hawks defense made a big fourth-down stop.
On a fourth-and-inches at midfield, Allen was stuffed at midfield by Chris Bermond and Anthony Cardinale.
Three plays later, Hawks quarterback Keagon Gillihan hit Brian Armenta on a 33-yard touchdown strike.
Donald Reyer's extra-point tied the score at 7 with 8: 05 to play in the half.
It appeared the score would remain tied going into the half, but the Hawks had other ideas when they took over at the 27 with just 34 seconds to play.
Gillihan raced up the middle for 22 yards and quickly called time out. On the next play, Gillihan scrambled for another 12 yards and got out of bounds with 18 seconds to play in the half.
The Hawks then crossed up the Tigers with a draw play to Adrian Whavers, who made several nice moves and out-raced the Tiger secondary for a 39-yard score with just :07 to play in the half.
The point after gave the Hawks a 14-7 lead at the half.
Whavers finished the game with 81 yards on 10 carries, he also chipped in 42 yards receiving.
Hancock increased its lead in the third quarter when it capped a 94-yard drive with a three-yard run with 3:31 to play in the quarter.
Gillihan collected 147 yards rushing on the evening on 19 carries.
The extra point was unsuccessful when a bad snap caused the holder, Cardinale, to have to attempt a pass which was picked off by Justin Wagner.
The missed attempt would prove very costly later in the game.
After stopping the Tigers and forcing a punt, the Hawks looked to close out the game early in the fourth, but a costly penalty washed away a 67-yard run by Lance Jaynes, which would have given Hancock a first-and-goal at the two.
The Tigers then stopped the Hawks' drive and got decent field position at their own 38 with 11 minutes to play.
Lafontaine went to work, hitting Marshall Taylor for 39 yards and then scrambling for a first down three plays later.
Lafontaine and Taylor ended the drive with a five-yard touchdown pitch and catch.
The point-after closed the gap to 20-14 with 7:41 to play.
Hancock took over at the 20 and after a first-down run by Gillihan, the Tigers' defense covered a fumble by Ditrick Goff at the 39 with 5:57 to play.
The Tigers did not take advantage of the gift because three plays later, Lafontaine's pass for Dunklin was intercepted by Michael Henry at the 10.
After losing yardage, the Hawks were faced with a fourth-and-17 at their own three. They punted from their end-zone with 2:37 to play.
The punt was a good one, but Carl Ivey returned the ball 10 yards and the Tigers had a golden opportunity with the ball at the Hawk 30.
After a pass interference call, the Tigers struck pay dirt three plays later when Lafontaine hit Marshall on a five-yard jump pass.
Lafontaine finished the game with 12 completions on 20 passes for 190 yards and two scores. Hoffman collected four receptions, 63 yards, and two scores.
Johnson's point-after gave the Tigers a 21-20 lead with 1:02 to play.
The game was not over, however, as the Hawks got a 25-yard return from Jaynes to the 40.
Gillihan connected with Armenta for two passes and a first down to the Tiger 45 and with nine seconds to play, Gillihan hit Whavers for 20 yards to the 25.
A penalty and an incompletion forced Hancock to attempt a 47-yard field goal on the last play of the game.
Reyer's kick was wide right and the Tiger's held on to the victory 21-20.
"It was a great football game," Hopgood said. "So many times in games like this it comes down to turnovers and penalties. I was very happy with the way we responded to some adversity."
The Tigers were led on the ground by Allen who collected 68 yards on 18 carries.
On defense, Tyler Jordan had a stellar game with 14 tackles.
Hancock will host St. Stanislaus next week in Kiln and Bay High will host Pearl River Central.
