The Bay High Tigers gave up a couple of first half scores to Pearl River Central Friday night on Tank Williams Field at J.D. McCullough Stadium, but for the third consecutive game the Tigers rallied in the second half, this time closing out the Blue Devils, 29-12.
"Our defensive staff did an excellent job making adjustments in the second half," said Tigers Coach Jeff Hopgood. "Our defense did an excellent job of stopping the run in the second half. These kids don't quit.
"We had miscues in the first half that put us behind the eight ball, but we came out and played hard in the second half."
The visitors put up two first quarter scores, but the Tigers took the lead for good on a 36-yard Rahien Lyons carry with 4:31 remaining in the first half. Lyons' carry capped an 80-yard drive, which was highlighted by a 39-yard pass play from Braxton Lafontaine to Brennan Dunklin.
The Tigers added to their lead when Elijah White stepped between the ball and a Blue Devils receiver and picked it off, returning the ball for 64 yards and a score, giving the Tigers a 22-0 lead after the PAT kick with 5:22 remaining in the third quarter.
"That play was huge," Hopgood added. "That played turned the momentum in the game; after that we settled down and started executing our offense."
Lyons scored the Tigers' final touchdown of the night on a 17 yard carry early in the fourth quarter.
Pearl River got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter capping the game's opening drive with a 49-yard quarterback keeper through the line of scrimmage for the score.
The Tigers responded by going 81 yards on 7 plays. Brennan Dunklin capped the Drive with a 5-yard tote for the score. Lafontaine avoided tacklers in the backfield but broke free and found a block wall to the end zone for the 2-point conversion to give the Tigers an 8-6 lead with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter. The Tigers first scoring was aided by a 26-yard Lafontaine to Marshall Hoffman pass play, which gave the Tigers excellent field position at the visitors' 40 yard line.
On the night Lafontaine completed 8 of 12 passes for 121 yards with one interception. Lyons led the Tigers with 121 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Dunklin had 80 yards on 6 carries. Allen finished with 33 yards on 11 carries.
Defensively, the Tigers were led by Patrick Fontenot with 17 tackles (2 sacks); White added 9 tackles and two interceptions - one returned for a touchdown; Kendall Island had 11 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
The Tigers are 3-1 as they begin their district schedule, hosting Poplarville next Friday night at McCullough Stadium.
