The Bay High Tigers and the Poplarville Hornets were all tied up at 21-21 going into the fourth quarter of Friday night's district battle at McCullouch Stadium in Bay St. Louis, but the Tigers Elijah White came up with a huge deflection of a 2-point conversion pass to edge out a 28-27 win for the Tigers.
"We just didn't execute and we let them back in the game," said Tigers coach Jeff Hopgood. "But we were able to stop them on the 2-point conversion. I'm proud of them. Our kids fought hard."
The Tigers scored 7 points in each of the first three quarters to take a 21-0 lead with just over eight minutes to play in the third quarter.
The second score came with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half and the third capped the opening drive of the third quarter.
Then the visitors put together an impressive 57-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 15-yard touchdown run. About two minutes later, the Hornets intercept Braxton Lafontaine and carry for a touchdown to get back in the game down 21-14. Three plays later the Hornets picked up what was ruled a fumble and carried for the visitors third score that tied the game at 21 with 2:58 remaining in the third quarter.
On their ensuing possession the Tigers picked up a chunk of yardage on a quarterback keeper by Lafontaine who picked up 36 yards down the Poplarville 12 yardline. Dillan Ladner carried for the four yard score to put the Tigers back in the lead and Seth Johnson's PAT ended up being the difference in the ballgame.
"The miscues hurt us," Hopgood added. "We got behind the eight ball, but our kids didn't give up. We made some mistakes on offense and let them back in the game. But we fought hard. Our defense really played well. They made plays when we needed them."
The Tigers first score came on their second possession of the night as Lafontaine connected with Brennan Dunklin for a 16-yard touchdown catch and run.
The Tigers second score followed a defensive stance by the Tigers that held the Hornets on fourth down with nearly 7 minutes remaining in the second quarter.
The Tigers then drove the field 73 yards, converting two fourth down plays. Lafontaine hit Rahien Lyons over the top for a 15-yard toss and run.
On the night, Lafontaine completed 19 of 25 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Dunklin had 2 catches for 20 yards and a touchdown; Marshall Hoffman had 65 yards on 4 catches; Lyons added 28 yards on three catches.
Lafontaine added another 56 yards rushing, followed by Lyons who tallied 53 yards on 11 carries and Julious Allen with 21 yards on 10 carries.
Defensively, Pat Fontenot and Justin Wagner led the Tigers with 14 tackles apiece; Skylar Favre and Kendall Island each totaled 9 tackles.
The Tigers improved to 4-1 (1-0, district) on the season. The Tigers host St. Stanislaus next Friday night in district action at J.D. McCullouch Stadium
