The St. Stanislaus Rock-a-chaws (5-1, 2-0) used a sound rushing attack followed by their adept passing attack to hold off a hard-charging Bay High Tiger squad 43-29 and retain the Crab Trap trophy on South Beach Blvd for another year.
The Tigers (4-2, 1-1) got behind 28-7 at halftime but made adjustments at halftime to come roaring back; however, it was too little too late.
Bay High head coach Jeff Hopgood commented, "We did not make plays in the first half on offense. There were two totally different styles of offense on the field. We allowed Dylan favre and their offense too many touches and we did not play solid defense. At halftime, we made some adjustments and found some areas we could attack. SSC has a very solid team. Next week we play at Forrest County and they are a very solid team. They will all be competitive as this district is a solid one."
The Rocks started on offense and three straight carries by Favre put the Rocks in the endzone. Favre carried for gains of 18 and 22 before he broke free for a 23-yard score with 10:33 left in the game. Evan Ladner converted on the PAT to make the score 7-0.
The two teams swapped possessions before the Tigers got going. Bay High took over at the SSC 34 yardline after a fumble recovery by Antonio Reed.
Braxton Lafontaine hooked up with Julious Allen for a 16-yard gain. Two plays later, Allen found Rahien Lyons for a 14-yard score on a halfback pass with 15 seconds left in the first quarter. Seth Johnson converted on the PAT to make the score 7-7.
Following the kickoff, the Rocks struck again. Favre hooked up with Krisjon Wilkerson for a 38-yard gain. Three plays later, Favre found Joe Klein for a 10-yard scoring toss with 10:34 left in the half. Ladner converted on the PAT to make the score 14-7.
After some moderate gains on the ground by Dillan Ladner, the Tigers pinned the Rocks at their own five yardline on a 35-yard punt by Josh Necaise.
The Rocks found paydirt 95 yards later highlighted by several plays. Kollin Cannon gained 43 yards on two rushes. Favre hooked with Wilkerson for 11 yards and Boomer Scarborough for 37 before finding Cannon for a 20-yard score with 3:38 left before intermission. Ladner made the score 21-7 with the PAT.
The Rocks added one more score before halftime. Favre made consecutive tosses to Wilkerson of 22 and seven yards with the latter being a touchdown with 21 seconds left in the half. Ladner made the PAT and the score at the break was 28-7.
The adjustments at halftime for the Tigers turned quick dividends as Allen returned the kickoff 82 yards for the score with 11:47 remaining. The two-point conversion from Lafontaine to Justin Wagner was good making the score 28-15.
The Tigers picked off Favre on the next series at their own 33 yardline. After three straight carries by Ladner, Allen broke free for a 25-yard gain down to the Rock 21 yardline. Brennan Dunklin ripped off 21 yards for the score with 6:43 left in the third quarter. Johnson converted on the PAT to make the score 28-22.
Not to be outdone, the Rocks returned the ball to their 30 yardline. Scarborough gained 46 yards on a rumble up the middle. Cannon added 14 yards before he fumbled the ball to teammate Zander Romano who carried the ball the extra yard for the score with 5:37 left in the third quarter. Scarborough added the two-point conversion to make the score 36-22.
The Tigers responded quickly with a score of their own. Bay high started at their own 18 yardline following the kickoff. Ladner ripped off a 27-yard rush to give Bay High some running room at the Rock 41 yardline. Two plays later, Lafontaine kept the ball for a 40-yard score with 2:07 left in the third quarter. Johnson converted on the PAT to make the tally 36-29.
To keep with the flow of the second half, the Rocks responded to the Tigers' score on their ensuing possession. SSC kept the ball on the ground with Favre rushing eight times on the nine-play drive. Favre rushed for 73 yards on the drive including the 10-yard score with 10:04 left in the game. Ladner added the PAT to make the score 43-29.
The two teams traded possessions twice to run out the clock.
SSC head coach Forrest Williams stated, "This game was what makes rivalry games so competitive. It was back and forth game, especially in the second half. It was textbook football for us in the first half. However, in the second half we made some errors and Bay High made some adjustments. Our defense dug deep late in the game and we got a turnover when we needed it."
The Rocks rushed for a season best 272 yards in the game while Bay High added 244 yards on the ground. Favre was the leading rusher for SSC with 150 yards on 21 carries and two scores. He also added 269 yards in the air on 15-for-27 passing with three touchdowns. Wilkerson caught eight passes for 143 yards and a score.
Bay High was led by Julious Allen with 89 yards on 11 carries while Dillan Ladner added 71 yards on nine carries.
Bay High travels to Forrest County AHS next Friday night. The Aggies defeated Poplarville 31-21. St. Stanislaus hits the road to Greene County who were winners over Pass Christian 43-0. Both games are set to kickoff at 7pm.
