After just missing out on the play-offs the past two seasons, the Bay High Tigers football team will be looking to break through this season in district 8-4A.

"I think we have a pretty good team this year," Head Coach Jeff Hopgood said. "We have a really blue-collar team. We don't have a lot of top college recruits, but they are a hard-working group who are buying into our system nicely."

The 2011 Tigers will only return five seniors for this year's campaign.

Despite the few seniors, the Tigers will still have plenty of experienced players, especially on their massive offensive and defensive line.

"Our line is definitely one of our strong points," Hopgood said. "We have several three-year starters on the line. This group has played together for a while, and they continue to improve."

Junior Travis Brogle – 6'2, 290 pounds – will anchor the offensive line. His line mates include juniors Aaron Bourgeois, 6'03, 295; Phalen Booker, 6', 230; Kendall Island, 6', 220; and sophomore Dusty Breckley, 6'2, 320.

The line will be opening holes for a pair of speedy Tiger tailbacks. Senior Clifton White -- the Tigers' leading rusher in 2010 - -is back, along with talented junior Justus Lett. Junior Donovan Davis has emerged as the starting quarterback in 2011.

"Donovan was our starting cornerback last year," Hopgood said. "He's done a good job ever since the spring, and really emerged as a leader."

Starting at receiver for the Tigers this year will be Tre Acosta, Antwone James, and James Franklin.

Hopgood said having a big offensive line and some talented skill players gives him a lot of options.

"We're going to be able to do a lot of things," he said. "Obviously, we're going to want to establish the run, but we can do a lot of things with the personnel we have."

On defense, the Tigers will lean on several of their key offensive players who will play both ways.

"We're a 4-A school, and that's just the way it is," Hopgood said. "We're going to have some guys going both ways, but hopefully, not as many as last year. We have a little bit more depth this year."

Clark Breland, Shkeele McDowell, Hunter Murrey, Robert Lang and Trevor Strong are expected to be starters for the Tigers defense.

Bay High will open the season today with a jamboree game against St. Patrick. The official start to the season is on Aug. 19 when the Tigers travel to St. Martin.

The non-district schedule includes Lumberton, West Harrison, Hancock, and East central.

The Tigers begin district play on Sept. 30 when they take on Greene County.

Other district games include cross-town rival St. Stanislaus, Vancleave, Poplarville, and Forrest County. The top four teams make the play-offs, and Hopgood said he hopes the Tigers are in that number.

"The last two years, it's come down to a handful of plays," he said. "We've been really close to making the play-offs, and I think the kids are hungry this year. Our goal is to make the play-offs and go from there."
