The Bay High Tigers mauled the home-standing Yellow Jackets at St. Martin on Friday night with outstanding performances on both sides of the ball and on special teams. The Tigers took a 33-0 halftime lead enroute to a 49-0 shutout in their season opener.
The Tigers caught the host team off-guard on huge first down plays and sometimes on second down.
“It felt good for two quarters,” said a pleased Tigers’ coach Jeff Hopgood. “They were playing us in cover zero without a safety. It allowed us to pop a couple of big runs.”
The Tigers managed first half running scores of 8 yards, 63 yards, and 51 yards, along with a safety, a two-point conversion, and a fumble returned for a score to put the game out of the reach of the home team.
Starting their opening possession at their own 25 yardline, the Yellow Jackets misconnected on a screen pass on the first play from scrimmage. Phalen Booker recovered for the Tigers for his first of two first-half fumble recoveries. Two plays later, Justus Lett carried through the line of scrimmage untouched for the score. The Tigers 2-point conversion attempt failed as the Tigers led, 6-0.
Two possessions later, Lett again broke the field, this time on first down through the middle of the line of scrimmage for 63 yards and the Tigers second score of the night. The Tigers led 13-0 after Paul Johnson’s successful PAT kick.
On the first play on the second quarter, Clifton White found a seam near the line of scrimmage and outraced the field for a 51-yard carry for a score, giving the Tigers a three touchdown lead. Donovan Davis found Rashad Williams in the end zone for the two-point conversion to give the Tigers a 21-0 lead.
On the Yellow Jackets’ next possession, with the Tigers front forcing pressure, the Yellow Jackets snap to the punter went through the end zone to give the Tigers a safety to increase their lead to 23-0.
Johnson added a field goal with 3:42 remaining in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 26-0 lead.
The Tigers closed out their first half scoring as Phalen Booker recovered his second fumble of the half in the Yellow Jackets’ backfield and carried it 10 yards for the score to give the Tigers a 33-0 lead after John’s successful PAT kick.
“Phalen is always around the ball,” added Hopgood. “Whether it’s offense or defense, he’s always around the ball.”
The Tigers opened the second half in the same big-play fashion of the first half. White fielded the second half kickoff at the 11 yard line near the middle of the field; he split two blockers and outraced the field for an 89-yard score. The Tigers led 40-0 following Johnson’s third PAT kick.
Two possessions later for the Yellow Jackets, another snap went through the end zone, giving the Tigers their second safety of the night, and the Tigers led 42-0 at the 5:24 mark of the third quarter.
The Tigers final score came as Antwine James carried it in from one yard out. Johnson’s fourth PAT kick closed out the night’s scoring 8:57 remaining in the game.
The Tigers defense did their job all night, shutting out the Yellow Jackets run on the insides and the outsides.
“Our defense played great; they did a super job of swarming to the ball,” Hopgood added. “Coty Mitchell and Antwine James were key to us winning this game tonight. They were key to us shutting down the option. Kendall Island and Robert Lamb were a big part of that as well.
“We’ve got a long way to go and we’ve got a tough schedule ahead of us,” Hopgood explained. “We’ve got the state champion (Lumberton) coming at us next week, but it felt good for two quarters tonight.”
The Tigers host Lumberton next Friday night at J.D. McCullough Stadium Tank Williams Field.
