The Bay High Tigers got off to a good start with an early defensive score and then kept Lumberton at bay with sustained drives that clawed away at the Panthers' hopes. The Tigers put away the defending 2A state champions, 29-18 at J.D. McCullough Stadium Tank Williams Field last night.
"This is a huge win for this football program," said Tigers' coach Jeff Hopgood. "I am so proud of these guys. We played a very good team tonight, but we played hard. These kids needed a test against a good football team like this, and they played their hearts out. This is a quality win for the Bay High football program.
"Credit goes to the offensive line. I told them that for us to get a win, they would have to dominate the line of scrimmage. And they did that.
"The offensive line of Aaron Bourgeois, Kendall Island, Travis Brogle, Jarryd Jacobs, and Phalen Booker opened holes for our guys all night."
"Most of these guys go both ways," Hopgood added. "We fought through cramps and everything else to dominate the line of scrimmage."
Booker drew first blood for the Tigers as he broke free on the first snap of the game and got between the Lumberton exchange between the quarterback and runningback, forcing a fumble and carrying for the score with just eight ticks off the game clock. Paul Johnson's PAT kick put the Tigers up 7-0.
"Phalen has a knack for being where the ball is," Hopgood said. "He did the same thing last week."
The Tigers' defense pressed the quick footed Panthers, disallowing a first down on their next possession, holding the visitors to three plays and a punt. Coty Mitchell and Island stuffed Jyrick Sibley at the line of scrimmage to force the punt.
Following the punt, the Tigers started at their own 48 yardline, picking up two first downs and gaining 34 yards to the 38 yardline before Paul Johnson capped the drive with his first of three field goals on the night. The Tigers led 10-0 with 5:05 remaining in the first quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Johnson made a huge play with a touchdown-saving tackle at the Tigers' seven yard line. Two plays later, the Panthers got on the board for a touchdown. James made a huge play for the Tigers on the two-point conversion attempt, sacking the scrambling quarterback deep in the backfield.
Clifton White returned the ensuing kickoff 31 yards to give the Tigers excellent field position near midfield. Johnson capped the 10-play drive with a 26-yard field goal to give the Tigers a 13-6 lead with 9:45 remaining in the second quarter.
Mitchell ended the visitors' ensuing drive with an interception for the Tigers with a six-yard return, giving the Tigers outstanding field position at the Lumberton 28 yardline. The Tigers were flagged with a holding penalty on first down, but on the very next play, facing first-and-25 yards for a first, Donovan Davis dropped back and hit Rashad Williams on stride for a 48-yard touchdown. The Tigers led 20-6 at the 7:39 mark in the second quarter.
On the Panthers' ensuing series, the Tigers' defense held the visitors to four snaps and a punt.
The Panthers' defense returned the favor on the Tigers' ensuing possession and began their next possession at their own 23 yardline.
The Panthers picked up three first downs and capped the drive with a 24-yard touchdown toss. Island stopped the two-point conversion attempt with a huge, caging tackle at the line of scrimmage.
The Tigers opened the second half with a 16-play, seven-and-a-half-minute drive that wore down the Panthers' defense. Johnson connected on his final fieldgoal of the night, a 35-yarder to extend the Tigers' lead to 23-12.
The Tigers' defense went to work again, this time allowing the visitors a single first down before forcing a punt at their own 29 yardline.
White went to work for the Tigers on their ensuing possession, carrying four times for 44 yards, including a 19-yarder. Proulx capped the drive with a one-yard carry for the score, putting the game out of reach for the Panthers at 29-12 with 10:43 remaining on the game clock.
The visitors put up their final score of the night with just over seven minutes left in the game, but the Tigers' defense again disallowed the Panthers a first down on their last possession of the night.
On the night, Justus Lett led the Tigers' rushing attack with 24 carries for 107 yards. White added 10 carries for 53 yards. Davis completed three of five passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.
The Tigers play on the road next Friday night as they travel to West Harrison.
