KILLEEN, Texas- The Pflugerville girls varsity basketball squad opened up the 2009-10 campaign on a victorious note, posting a 58-53 away victory over Harker Heights with a small roster of seven available players. The Panthers had four new starters in the lineup with the small roster.
Pflugerville used a career-high and team-high 13 points from junior post DyMesheon Hyder, an impressive 22-for-29 effort from the foul line and a tough defense which forced Harker Heights into 23 turnovers en route to the win.

Hyder, making her first career varsity start, was seven-for-nine from the foul line and added a career-best seven rebounds. Two other Lady Panthers joined her in double-figure scoring, with senior forward Christie Mooney adding 12 points and junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi chipping in with 10 points. Sophomore post Itiana Taylor, in her varsity debut, added five points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Both Taylor and Mooney led the PHS defense with five steals apiece. Ebomwonyi rounded out her game with six rebounds and three steals.
It also was the season opener for the Harker Heights Knights, who also were strong from the free throw line (15-for-21) but committed 26 turnovers and missed all 13 of their 3-point attempts.
Pflugerville held a 30-26 edge in rebounding and collected 22 steals to the Knights' six thefts.
PHS led 33-25 at intermission. Harker Heights pulled to within five points twice in the third quarter, but free throws from Ebomwonyi and a jumper by sophomore guard Jasmyn Booker gave the Lady Panthers a 49-42 edge entering the final period.
In the final quarter, the Knights came within four points, 51-47 with five minutes to go before two free throws by Hyder and Mooney, followed by a Mooney layup, pushed the P'ville lead to 10, 57-47 with two minutes remaining. In that span, Harker Heights had three turnovers and a missed shot and never threatened again.
