Posted Nov 13/09 - Former Panther Cierra Martin, UTSA guard: Off-court friendships put on hold for opening matchup (Austin American-Statesman feature)
In the Friday (Nov. 13) edition of the Austin American-Statesman, sports writer Rick Cantu profiled a reunion between three former Central Texas basketball stars - two on the UTSA hoops squad and one on the Texas team - who were meeting in their collegiate season opener Friday at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

The former All-Staters meeting on the Frank Erwin Center court were
former Pflugerville All-State forward Cierra Martin, a redshirt sophomore forward for the UTSA Roadrunners; her teammate, junior guard Amber Gregg, a former McNeil All-State guard; and UT sophomore guard Ashleigh Fontenette.

Here is an excerpt from the story:

They grew up as basketball buddies, three girls on the same summer club team, building friendships and competing against each other when they stepped onto a court.

It could have been outdoors or indoors. Winter or summer. Day or night. Basketball became a passion for Amber Gregg, Cierra Martin and Ashleigh Fontenette.

For 40 minutes tonight, though, their friendship will be put on hold when the University of Texas women's basketball team opens its 36th season against Texas-San Antonio in a nonconference game at the Erwin Center.

Gregg and Martin will be dressed in UTSA orange and blue. Fontenette will flash a Hook 'Em Horns sign as a sophomore co-captain for Texas.

They recall fiercely competitive games across Central Texas, many while they were teammates on the Austin Elite club team.

Martin, a 5-8 guard, said she "secretly misses" her days as a Pflugerville Panther, but on the eve of tonight's game, she was excited about playing Texas — and perhaps guarding an old friend.

"I am just looking forward to competing," Martin said. "Texas might think this will be a cakewalk for them, but we're going into the game looking to win. UTSA will compete and make this game a good one."
