Posted Nov 20/09 - 5-0 Panther Varsity moves into Greater Austin Tournament semifinals with 69-34 win over Willis; San Antonio Highlands up next in Saturday 11 am semifinals at McNeill HS
AUSTIN, Texas-- The starting forward duo of Christie Mooneyand Adesuwa Ebomwonyi(pictured) combined for 39 points, with Mooney collecting a game-high 20 and Ebomyoni adding 19 and pulled down a season-high 18 rebounds, to lift state-ranked Pflugerville to a 69-34 victory over Willis Friday afternoon in the Greater Austin Tournament. The Panthers, 5-0 overall, move to 3-0 in tourney action and advance to Saturday's semifinal matchup at 10 a.m. against fellow 5A Region 4 opponent San Antonio Highlands. That semifinal game takes place at McNeil HS, host of the tourney. A win by Pflugerville will put the Panthers into the championship game at 5 p.m. Saturday at McNeil. Arlington-Martin has already advanced to that 5 p.m. final and awaits the Pflugerville-SA Highlands winner.
In the game against WIllis (3-2), Ebomwonyi registered her first double-double of the year, shooting 7-for-11 from the field while grabbing her season-best 18 rebounds, 11 of them on the defensive boards. Ebomwonyi also had four steals.
Rounding out the double-figure scorers was sophomore forward Itiana Taylor with 12 points. Taylor also had eight rebounds and three steals.
The Panthers led 18-10 after one quarter and stretched their lead to 17 points at intermission, holding a 34-17 edge.
