Posted Nov 22/09 - Pflugerville sweeps Greater Austin Championships in Varsity, JV and Freshman division; Varsity wins title, 54-46, over Arlington Martin
Nov. 21, 2009:      Austin, Texas -- Behind Tournament MVP Christie Mooney (14 points) and All-Tournament performer Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (14 points, 7 rebounds), the undefeated Pflugerville varsity stopped Arlington Martin, 54-46 Saturday night to win the 2009 Greater Austin Tournament championship. The win moves Pflugerville to 7-0 on the year after going 4-0 in the three-day, 20-team varsity tournament. The Pflugerville JV and freshman teams also won their respective Tournament titles, each defeating (Leander) Rouse in the title game. The JV won by a 63-19 margin while the Panther freshmen claimed their championship with an easy 47-12 victory. In the varsity championship game against Arlington Martin, Pflugerville shot 45 percent from the floor and went an impressive 15 for 19 from the foul line in picking up their seventh consecutive victory. The Panthers hit 19 of 42 of their shot attempts and their pressing defense also forced Martin into 22 turnovers.

Martin countered by shooting 50 percent, making 17 of 34 shots, including five of eight 3-pointer taken.

In the four-game tourney, MVP Mooney collected 57 points and 21 rebounds, to average 14.3 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game in the Tournament. This included a season-high 20 points against Willis on Friday, Nov. 20. Ebomwonyi finished with 50 points and 43 rebounds in the tourney for averages of 12.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per tourney game.

After Pflugerville led at the half, 27-18 and extended it lead to 13 (39-26) on an Ebomwonyi layup. Arlington Martin closed to within seven points, 39-32, following a 3-pointer and a layup with 2:36 left in the third quarter. Mooney then scored four of P'ville final five points of the quarter, however, on two free throws and a fastbreak layup, to help PHS push its lead to 44-32 entering the final quarter.

In the final period, Martin pulled to within nine points (46-37) before junior guard Curtiesha Woods scored on consecutive fastbreak layups to give Pflugerville a 50-37 edge with 5:30 to go.

Sophomore forward Itiana Taylor and sophomore guard Ari Booth each added nine points to the Pflugerville effort.

The Panthers out-rebounded Arlington Martin by a 22-18 margin.

Joining Mooney and Ebomwonyi on the All-Tournament team were Arlington Martin junior forwards Nakachi Maduka and Destynee Hives-McCray.

The Panthers will return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 against defending State 4A champion Waco Midway at the Panther Gym in Pflugerville. Game time is set for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

Pflugerville JV and Freshman Squads both 6-0 after claiming respective Greater Austin Tournament titles

The Pflugerville junior varsity rolled to its Greater Austin Tournament title Saturday afternoon with a 63-19 victory over second year 3A school Rouse (Leander).

The Panther JV is now 6-0 on the year after going 3-0 at the tournament.

In the championship game, the Panthers led 33-10 at intermission, then out-scored Rouse 15-5 in the third quarter to take a commanding 48-15 lead. Top Panther performances came from freshman guard Taliah Brooks with a game-high 17 points, freshman forward Amy Staha (16 points) and 10 points and five rebounds from freshman post Diana Omozee.  Brooks and freshman forward Jonelle Smith (four points) each had seven steals.

The Pflugerville freshman (gold) squad also improved to 6-0 by defeating Rouse on Saturday in the title game. The Panthers were paced by a 14-point effort from post Raven Swain and 11 points from forward Destini Oakmon. P'ville held Rouse to four first half points and led at intermission, 24-4.

The Pflugerville JV and freshman A (gold) squads also will next play against Waco Midway on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at Pflugerville. The JV game is at 5:30 p.m. while the freshman A play at 5:30 p.m. as well in the Panther small gym.

Tuesday, the Pflugerville freshman B (blue) team also will play, facing Georgetown at 7:00 p.m. at Pflugerville (in small gym).
