Posted Dec 1/09 - Fourth quarter rally falls short as Panthers tripped by Bryan, 66-63; senior Christie Mooney (21 points) and sophomore Itiana Taylor (16 points) lead PHS; Panther JV, freshmen squads win
PFLUGERVILLE, Texas- A big fourth quarter rally by the Pflugerville varsity fell short Tuesday as the Panthers were edged by Bryan High School, 66-63, in a battle between two of the state's top-ranked 5A programs. There were six lead changes and one tie in the final 3:10 of the contest, and two missed layups by the Panthers in the final 18 seconds spelled the difference.

Down by 10 after three periods (50-40), Pflugerville toughened up its defense and went on a 17-6 run to start the final quarter, taking a 57-56 lead on two free throws by senior forward Christie Mooney (pictured) with 3:14 to go. A steal and fastbreak layup by sophomore forward Itiana Taylor pushed the lead to 59-56 before the Lady Vikings regained the lead, 60-59, with a short jumper and a putback with two minutes to play. Mooney gave P'ville its final lead (61-60) when she sank two free throws, but over the next minute Bryan went 3-for-4 from the foul line and led 63-61 with 41 seconds left.

The Panthers had a final rally, tying the game at 63-all on a DyMesheon Hyder putback with 23 seconds to go before Bryan's Carlisha Wyatt countered with a layup fto give the Vikings a 65-63 edge five seconds later. After Taylor missed on a fastbreak layup, Bryan's Amanda Lawson was fouled on the rebound attempt and missed the front end of a one-and-one. Pflugerville got the defensive rebound and a drive to the basket by Adesuwa Ebomwonyi saw her layup attempt fall short with three seconds to go. Bryan then sank a free throw for the final three-point margin.

The loss for Pflugerville sends the Panthers to 7-2, while Bryan, which features all seniors and one junior on the varsity, is now 10-1. In the most recent Texas Association of Basketball Coaches weekly poll, Pflugerville was ranked second and Bryan was 15th.

Mooney led Pflugerville with 21 points, while Taylor added 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go with five steals. Bryan senior forward Carlisha Watts led all scorers with 22 points.

The Panthers shot 48 percent for the game (19 for 40), while the Vikings went 27 for 52 from the floor (52 percent). P'ville hit 20 of 30 free throws while Bryan went 10 for 18 from the foul line. Pflugerville held a 33-21 edge in rebounding.

Pflugerville returns to action on Friday, Dec. 4 when it travels to Leander High School for a 7 p.m. contest.
