PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- The three-day, 32-team Pflugerville JV/Freshmen Tournament concluded Saturday evening with two Panther teams battling for the JV tournament title, as the undefeated Panther JV team stopped the P'ville freshman Gold ("A") team, 56-32, in the finals. The JV team remains undefeated on the year, moving to 12-0. The loss was the first for the P'ville Freshman Gold squad which is now 11-1.
Waco Midway won the championship in the Freshmen Tournament Division.
Coach Patrick Hinson's Panther Freshmen "A" squad faced all JV squads in the three-day tournament, going 3-1. Saturday morning, the Panthers met Bowie in the semifinals and emerged with an exciting 56-53 overtime win which was decided at the free throw line in the final minute. The score was tied 46-46 after regulation and the Panthers used strong rebounding and sank six free throws in OT to post the win. Post Raven Swain (13 points), guard Mackinize Browning (13 points) and guard Lexi Box (12 points) led the way for the Panthers.
In the championship game, coach April Ellickson's JV team led 19-12 after the first quarter and 33-23 before using superior height to dominate in the final half. Jasmine Brooks (12 points) and Stacy Ogunirinade (10 points) led the JV, while the Freshmen were led by Swain (13 points) and point guard Taylor Ross (7 points).
All Pflugerville teams open District 25-5A play Tuesday at Bastrop HS. The state-ranked Panther varsity (8-2) faces Bastrop at 7 p.m., preceded by the junior varsity game (5:30 p.m.) and freshman Gold ("A") game (5:15 p.m.); there will be no freshmen Blue ("B") game as Bastrop has just one freshman team.
