Posted Dec 8/09 - Panthers open defense of District 25-5A title with 61-42 win at Bastrop behind balanced effort; Hays Rebel Classic next; JV, Freshman also pick up wins at Bastrop

BASTROP, Texas -- Behind sophomore forward Itiana Taylor (14 points) and junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (10 points), the state's ninth-ranked Pflugerville Panthers posted a 61-42 victory over Bastop Tuesday to open District 25-5A action. Pflugerville, now 9-2 overall, has earned four consecutive district championships.

Taylor also chipped in with seven rebounds and a game-high five steals, while Ebomwonyi pulled down eight rebounds. Other top contributors included senior forward Christie Mooney (9 points), junior guard Curteisha Woods (four steals) and junior post DyMesheon Hyder who also had eight rebounds.

The Panthers never trailed in the game, racing out to an 11-0 lead to start the contest before extending their lead at intermission to 36-17.

Pflugerville will be in action at the Hays Rebel Classic in Buda, Texas, from Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 10-12. Thursday starts with pool play for the 13-team field. P'ville is in the pool with Vista Ridge and Weatherford. Friday and Saturday features bracket play. Please go to the HANDOUTS section  (to the left) to find the tournament bracket.

Pflugerville won the last two Rebel Classic championships.



 JV, Freshmen squads also defeat Bastrop; both return to play at the Georgetown Subvarsity Tournament Dec. 10-12

Pflugerville's junior varsity improved to 13-0 with a 77-14 win over Bastrop, while the freshmen "A" (Gold) squad moved to 12-1 with a 43-21 win over the Bears.

In the JV game, freshman guard Tayliah Brooks and freshman forward Diana Omozee led the way with 15 points each, while junior forward Kaela Thompson chipped in with 12 points. Omozee dominated play in the post and also hit four of five free throws to lead the Panther defensive effort.

The Panther freshmen were led by guards Taylor Ross and Lexi Box, each with 10 points.

Both teams turn their attention to the Georgetown Subvarsity Tournament which takes place Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 10-12. Please refer to the HANDOUTS section to find the "Georgetown Subvarsity Tournament" bracket.
