Posted Dec 10/09 - Panther Varsity advances to 1st place bracket in Hays Rebel Classic with two pool play wins Thursday over Vista Ridge (66-33) and Weatherford (81-60); JV, Freshmen win at Georgetown Tournament
BUDA, Texas- The No. 9 state-ranked Pflugerville varsity picked up two wins in Thursday's pool play round at the Hays Rebel Classic, cruising to a 66-36 victory over Vista Ridge in the afternoon before besting Weatherford 81-60 in a night game. The wins move the Panthers to 11-2 and advance Pflugerville into the Friday, Dec. 11 1st-place championship bracket. The Panthers play at 1:30 p.m. (in the Red Gym at Hays HS) against an opponent TBA, as pool play continued late Thursday night. A win Friday sends the two-time defending champion Panthers into the title game at noon on Saturday, Dec. 12. Thursday's top performances were turned in by junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi who collected a double-double against Vista Ridge (14 points, 12 rebounds) before posting a game-high 23 points with nine boards in the win over Weatherford, and senior forward Christie Mooney who notched 16 points and nine rebounds against Vista Ridge and added 12 points versus Weatherford.

Along with being the two-time defending Rebel Classic champion, Pflugerville is ranked ninth in the TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine weekly poll and 12th in the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) rankings.

In the Vista Ridge game, Mooney and Ebomwonyi were joined in double-figure scoring by junior guard Curtiesha Woods (12 points). Mooney went 10-for-12 in free throws and she and sophomore forward Itiana Taylor each had five steals.

In the Weatherford win, the Panthers attacked early, racing to a commanding 30-14 lead after the first quarter behind a pressure defensive effort which lead to numerous fastbreak layups. Besides top scorers Ebomwonyi and Mooney, sophomore guards Ari Booth chipped in with 14 points and Jasmyn Booker had nine. The two sophomores were strong from 3-point range with Booth hitting four treys and Booker two.  

Ebomwonyi went 7-for-9 from the free throw lane and also had a team-high four assists. Taylor chipped in with seven points and six rebounds in the balanced Panther attack.

As a team, the Panthers went an impressive eight-for-12 from 3-point territory and were 15 for 22 from the foul line.


JV, Freshmen squads win opening games at Georgetown Subvarsity Tournament

The Pflugerville JV and freshmen teams are in action at the Georgetown Subvarsity Tournament (Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 10-12), and both teams were victorious Thursday.

The JV improved to 15-0 with opening round wins over (62-13) over Vandergrift (62-13) and Austin Travis (56-8). Leading the way for the Panthers against Vandergrift were freshman forward Amy Staha (14 points) and junior forward Kaela Thompson, while junior post Shari Stewart netted a game-high 12 points and Staha had 10 in a balanced effort against Travis.

The Panther Freshman Gold ("A") squad opened tourney play with a 43-21 win over Vista Ridge and stands 13-1. Their next action is Friday (Dec. 11) at 5 p.m. against the Georgetown Blue squad in pool play second round competition.
