GEORGETOWN, Texas-- In the freshmen division of the Georgetown Tournament, Pflugerville's freshman "A" (Gold) team won the championship Saturday evening, best Pflugerville Connally 52-37 in the finals. The win pushes coach Patrick Hinson's Panthers to 16-1 on the year.
The Pflugerville JV team suffered its first loss of the season, snapping a 16-game win streak as host Georgetown upended the Panthers, 43-39, in the championship of the Georgetown Subvarsity JV division. The Panthers' JV squad defeated Pflugerville Connally Saturday morning, 72-41, in the tourney semifinals. The JV had picked up two tourney wins Thursday in pool play. Coach April Ellickson's team is now 16-1 as well.
The JV championship game was a hard-fought defensive battle, and freshman guard Tayliah Brooks led the way with 12 points. In the semifinal win over Connally, sophomore guard Taylor Cobbs (19 points), freshman forward Amy Staha (13) and forward Jonelle Smith (12) led the way.
The Pflugerville freshmen defeated Georgetown's top freshmen squad (Georgetown Blue) Friday night, 52-29 in pool play and then beat the same team again Saturday in the semifinals, 62-30. In the Friday night win, the Panthers were led by point guard Taylor Ross and guard Brenisha Payne, each with 14 points.
In the freshman tournament semifinals against Georgetown, Mackenzie Browning led the way with 15 points while Ross added 14 points and Payne 13.
