Posted Dec 18/09 - Panthers stop Westlake, 69-53, behind Christie Mooney's game-high 16 points and Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (14 points, eight rebounds) for seventh consecutive win
PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- Senior forward Christie Mooney (pictured) netted a game-high 19 points and junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi added 14 points, eight rebounds and a game-high tying six steals, to lead state-ranked Pflugerville to a 69-53 win over Westlake Friday in District 25-5A action. The win, PHS's seventh in a row, moves the Panthers to 14-2 overall and to 2-0 in the District. Joining them in double-figure scoring was sophomore forward Itiana Taylor (11 points) who also reached a double-double (double-figure scoring and rebounding) with 10 rebounds. She also had six steals. Led by Ebomwonyi and Taylor, the Panthers had 20 steals and pressured Westlake into 22 turnovers.

Pflugerville was helped by a strong free throw performance as the Panthers went 16 for 21 from the charity stripe. Westlake, now 13-4 overall and 1-1 in the district, went to the foul line just twice, missing both shots.

Mooney shot eight for 12 from the field and went 2-for-2 in free throws to collect her 19 points.

Down 8-0 and 12-4 to start the game, the Panthers trailed after one quarter, 19-16 as the Chaparrels shot a torrid 82 percent to start the game, making nine of their first 11 shots. Pflugerville then used a 24-11 run in the second quarter to open up a 40-30 lead at intermission. That second-quarter rally was sparked by Ebomwonyi, who had eight points and three steals in the quarter, and junior guard Curtiesha Woods with five points and three assists in the period. Woods finished with nine points.

Taylor gave PHS its first lead of the game, 20-19, on a putback with 6:45 to go in the period. The Chaps regained the lead a few minutes later, 23-22 before Woods gave the Panthers the lead for good, connecting on a 3-point play (driving layup and free throw) for a 25-23 edge with 4:40 to play. On Westlake's next possession, Ebomwonyi stole a pass at midcourt and hit a fastbreak layup to push the lead to four (27-23) and the Panthers never looked back.

Pflugerville ended the game shooting a solid 47.2 percent (25-for-53) from the floor while the Chaparrels cooled off after their 82 percent first-quarter shooting, finishing the game hitting 25 of 49 shots (51 percent). P'ville was three-for-six from 3-point range while Westlake was three-for-eight in treys. The Panthers enjoyed the edge in rebounding, 29-22, and in steals (20 to seven).

Coach Nancy Walling's Panthers now break for the Christmas holiday and will return to action Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 28-30, at the Mansfield Meredith Hatch Memorial Invitational Tournament (Mansfield, Texas). Pflugerville opens tourney play against Grapevine on Monday morning (Dec. 28) at 8 a.m., playing at Summit HS.
