Posted Jan 19/10 - Ebomwonyi leads way with 20 points and 11 rebounds as Pflugerville registers 72-47 victory over District opponent Bastrop

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- Led by game-highs of 20 points and 11 rebounds from junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (pictured) and two others in double-figure scoring, the state-ranked Pflugerville varsity posted a 72-47 win over Bastrop Tuesday in District 25-5A action. Joining Ebomwonyi in double-figure scoring were senior forward Christie Mooney (18 points) and sophomore forward Itiana Taylor (14 points). Mooney and Taylor each collected five steals as the Panthers moved to 22-4 overall and remain atop the District standings at 8-0.

The Panthers dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Lady Bears 50-20 and collected 21 steals to Bastrop's seven.

Bastrop, now 8-19, committed 34 turnovers in the game, including 13 in the first quarter as P'ville jumped out to leads of 11-0 and 17-5 to start the game.

Ebomwonyi shot a sizzling 10 for 14 from the field, as she dominated play from the onstart. At halftime, the junior forward had 14 points and eight rebounds. She and Mooney triggered the attack early, as Mooney had collected 12 points, five rebounds and five steals by halftime.

The closest Bastrop would get was 10 points in the third quarter as the Lady Bears cut the Panther lead to 45-35 with 3:44 to go. On Pflugerville's next possession, Ebomwonyi scored on a driving layup. Following a Bastrop turnover, Pflugerville was on the offensive attack, and Ebomwonyi picked up a loose ball in a scramble under the Panther basket and connected for another layup to push P'ville lead to 14 (49-35) and erase any Bastrop threat.

Pflugerville now returns to action on Friday, Jan. 22, meeting District foe Westlake at Westlake HS for a 7 p.m. contest. Earlier this season, the Panthers handed Westlake a 69-53 setback on Dec. 18 at Pflugerville.
