Posted Jan 22/10 - Panthers drop first District 25-5A game in two seasons with 56-50 overtime loss at Westlake
AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite a dramatic comeback with a three-pointer to send the game into overtime, the state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers could not sustain the momentum in the extra four-minute period and dropped their first District game of the year, 56-50, to Westlake at Westlake HS Friday night.  P'ville is now 22-5 overall. The loss snaps the Panthers' six-game win streak and puts Pflugerville in a tie atop the District standings (at 8-1) with Pflugerville Connally. Westlake (22-6) trails by one game in the District with a 7-2 mark.

Junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi sent the game into overtime with her only 3-point field goal of the game with 15 seconds left in regulation. Down 48-45 with 15 seconds to go, Ebomwonyi drained a 3-pointer from straightaway atop the 3-point arc to send the game into OT.

In overtime, Westlake outscored the Panthers 8-2 and capitalized on three Panther turnovers in the final 38 seconds. After two Ebomwonyi free throws tied the game at 50-50 with 2:13 in OT, the Lady Chaps took the lead for good on two free throws by guard Cherell Mays (52-50) 11 seconds later. After a missed Panther shot, Mays scored on a layup to push the lead to 54-50 which was followed by the Pflugerville turnovers.

This was the first District loss in two seasons for the Panthers, who won the District 25-5A title last year (16-0) en route to their State Tournament final four semifinal showing.

Ebomwonyi led the Panthers with 15 points and also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Itiana Taylor (13 points) and senior forward Christie Mooney (12 points) rounded out the Panthers in double-figure scoring. Mooney finished with a game-high six steals.

Westlake shot 50 percent from the floor (20 of 40), while P'ville was hurt by cold shooting, connecting on just 18 of 50 shots (36 percent).

Shooting woes contributed to Pflugerville trailing at the half, 25-20, as the Lady Chaps hit 11 of their 19 first-half shots while the Panthers made six of 16 from the floor.

The Panthers were out-rebounded by a 26-23 margin. Westlake turned the ball over 22 times to Pflugerville's 15 turnovers.

The Lady Chaps were led by a game-high 20 points from senior post Courtney Duever while May added 17.

Pflugerville has five District games remaining and returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 26 when it hosts Anderson HS in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Panther Gym.

Pflugerville JV and Freshman Gold record wins over Westlake, with both squads moving to 24-1

The Pflugerville junior varsity used a game-high 20 points from freshman point guard Tayliah Brooks en route to a 60-32 victory over Westlake Friday. The Panther JV remains undefeated (9-0) in District action and moves to 24-1 on the year.

Junior post Stacy Ogunirinade and freshman forward Amy Staha added nine point apiece in the winning effort.

The Pflugerville freshman "A" (Gold) squad forced 39 Westlake turnovers as it coasted to a 55-18 win. The Panther freshmen "A" also are 24-1 and 9-0 in district action. Guard Taylor Ross collected a game-high 20 points while forward Destini Oakman finished with nine points.

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Pflugerville JV meets Anderson High's JV at 6 p.m. prior to the 7:30 p.m. varsity contest. The freshmen "A" game will be at 5:15 p.m. while the freshman "B" game has a 6:30 p.m. tip.
