Posted Feb 2/10 - Ebomwonyi (18 points) and Enemkpali (16) lead the way as Pflugerville stops Akins, 79-50, for coach Nancy Walling's 500th win

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas -- Led by five in double-figure scoring, including game-highs of 18 points and nine rebounds from junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi (pictured) and 16 points from junior post Nneka Enemkpali, the state-ranked Pflugerville Panthers recorded a 79-50 victory over District opponent Akins Tuesday at Panther Gym. The victory pushes the Panthers to 25-5 overall as Pflugerville remains the District 25-5A leader at 11-1. The win also was the 500th career victory for head coach Nancy Walling. Walling, whose all-time high school head coaching record is now 500-237 (.679). Walling, third in voting last year for 2009 WBCA National Coach of the Year honors and who coached in the WBCA/Nike High School All-America Game at the Women's Final Four in St. Louis, is in her 21st year as Panther head coach and in her 23rd year overall.

P'ville led 37-20 at intermission behind Ebomwonyi's 10 points and five rebounds in the first two quarters. Up by just one, 12-11, the Panthers exploded for a 25-9 over the last 10 minutes of the first half, led by Ebomwonyi, Enemkpali (7 points) and junior guard Curtiesha Woods (7 points).

The Panthers shot 15 for 31 in the first half, hitting 48 percent of their shots. P'ville held a 26-13 edge on the boards as well and forced the Lady Eagles (15-13 overall, 6-6 in the District) into 10 first-half turnovers.

Pflugerville extended its lead to 47-22 with 5:32 left in the third quarter on two Christie Mooney fast-break baskets and a Ebomwonyi putback. The Panthers' biggest lead was 34 points (58-24) following two consecutive 3-pointers by sophomore guard Ari Booth with 2:58 left in the period.

Woods finished with 13 points and a game-high five assists, while Booth (11 points) and Mooney (10 points) rounded out the Panther double-figure scorers. Sophomore forward Itiana Taylor pulled down nine rebounds while sophomore guard Jasmyn Booker had four assists and six rebounds in the winning effort.

Akins was held to 36 percent shooting and was paced by Vanessa Winston's 16 points.

Pflugerville has two regular season games remaining, and will face Bowie HS in a District 25-5A contest on Friday, Feb. 5 at 8 p.m. at Bowie.

 


 Panther JV and Freshman "A" teams roll over Akins as both improve to 27-1

The Pflugerville JV and freshman Gold (A) squads remain undefeated in District play after registering big wins over Akins on Tuesday at PHS. The JV squad won 71-23, while the Panther's top freshmen squad earned a 57-10 win. (There was no freshmen "B" game played).

The JV raced out to a 37-10 halftime lead as 10 Panthers scored in the game. The Panthers were led by 10 points apiece from forward Jonelle Smith and junior forward Kaela Thompson.

 In the freshmen contest, Pflugerville was led by a game-high 16 points from guard Taylor Ross, while Lexi Box and Raven Swain chipped in with nine points each. The Panthers took early control with a 37-10 edge at halftime.

Next up for the JV and freshmen will be Friday's (February 5) games at Bowie HS. The JV and freshmen "B" games take place at 6:30 p.m. while the freshman "A" play at 5:15 p.m. against the Bulldogs.
