Posted Feb 19/10 - Pflugerville stops San Antonio O'Connor, 56-39, in State Area playoffs; advances to face San Antonio Wagner in Regional quarterfinal action

KYLE, Texas -- Behind a tremendous defensive effort, the state-ranked Pflugerville Panther girls basketball squad advanced to the 2010 State 5A regional quarterfinals with a 56-39 Area round victory over San Antonio O'Connor Friday night at Lehman HS. The Panthers, now 29-5, will face San Antonio Wagner in the 5A Regional quarterfinals on Tuesday, Feb. 23. That quarterfinal matchup between Pflugerville and Wagner (32-2) will be at 7 p.m. at Lehman HS.

Junior post Nneka Enemkpali (pictured) led the Panthers on both ends of the floor, scoring 12 points while pulling down a game-high and season-high 18 rebounds. Enemkpali combined with junior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi to lead a Panther dominance on the boards, as Ebomwonyi pulled down 12 rebounds. She also added eight points and a game-best seven steals.

San Antonio O'Connor, which placed second in the District 28-5A, ends its season at 26-9. O'Connor went to the foul line only twice, making one free throw, as the Panthers were only called for a total of four fouls in the game. The Panthers made 15 free throws.

Pflugerville led 19-7 after one period. The second quarter was a low-scoring eight minutes of play with each squad netting nine points as Pflugerville took a 28-16 lead into intermission. The Panthers extended that 12-point halftime lead to 20 after three quarters (45-25), holding O'Connor to single-digit points for the third consecutive quarter.

Other top Pflugerville performances were turned in by sophomore forward Itiana Taylor (10 points, eight rebounds) and senior forward Christy Mooney (eight points, seven rebounds).

This was the 18th state playoff Area Championship in PHS history.
